I previously got some useful help looking for one ancestor, so was hoping for another
One of my ancestors is Phoebe Shaw, 1857. I see her in the 1861 census with her parents Jervis and Elizabeth in 1871 with just Elizabeth. In 1881, she is the housekeeper for Henry Chandler, with 4 year old Henry Shaw listed as her son. Henry and Phoebe marry in 1883, the certificate confirming her father as Jervis Shaw (deceased) and are still married in 1891, where Henry seems to be listed as James H Chandler (both born 1877)
I can't find any birth reference for her. There was a Phoebe Shaw in 1853 in Sheffield, but that is not her
I also am not sure of the parents marriage. A Jarvis Shaw married in Mansfield in 1858, but that was to either a Jane or Catherine. There was also a marriage of a Jervis Shaw to a Bridget Elizabeth D'orsay, but I can't find either in 1841 or 1851 and without a birth certificate, can't be sure it is the right marriage
So, any idea where I might find her birth or previous evidence for her parents would be helpful
ETA
Elizabeth was born in Manchester according to the 1861,71,81 and 91 census and Jervis/Jarvis in Derby
There is a Phoebe Shaw born Sept quarter 1853 in Chorton which i think is Manchester area.
The ref is 8c 448 listed on freebmd site.
Could it be the one you are searching for ?.
Not seen any for 1857.

Re: Phoebe and Jervis Shaw
Hi,
Like Mark I am having difficulty with this family.
BUT I do have an idea what the problem could be.
I believe that "Elizabeth" was married before and the marriage you found in 1861 could be the right couple.
Bridget Elizabeth D'Orsay and Jarvis Shaw Dec qtr 1861 Sheffield 9c 534.
Observations.
On the 1861 census they say they are husband and wife but maybe not.
Sarah was registered as a Shaw (in park) which is where they were on the 1861 census.Sarah was 1 mth old at that date.
There is a death of a James D'Orsay in Sheffield Sep qtr 1860 Sheffield 9c 171.
Jarvis/Jervis is not a common name in Sheffield.
but there again you know he came from Derby and Elizabeth from Manchester.
I can not find a Phoebe Dorsay registered in or around Sheffield but her name could have been massacred. By the way she was 4 on the 1861 census so born 1856 or 57.
There is a death in Rotherham of a Jervis Shaw in 1853 which could have a bearing on the problem or not. Jervis was 24 on the 1861 census making his year of birth 1837 ish.
I will leave it with you as you maybe able to come forward with more info especially do you know their religion which might help us zero in more.
Keep St Bedes Rotherham in mind as well as St Vincents & St Marie's in Sheffield but I have looked for baptisms there with no luck.
Thanks, it hadn't occured to me that Elizabeth could have been married before, and that Phoebe could be the daughter of that marriage. It wouldn't be the first time that a person lists the man who raised them on their marriage certificate, rather than their biological father.
I couldn't find a James d'Orsay marriage between 1850 and 1860 though, and although I can see a few people called Phoebe Shaw born 1856/1857, none in Sheffield
I don't know about Jervis and Elizabeth, but Phoebe and her husband baptised some of the children at St John the Baptist Church, Owlerton
I did previously try to get one of the sibling's birth certificates, but most have pretty common names, and my first attempt was a failure.
