Re: Burial Records

The cemetery record shows,

Swift, Joseph (Labourer, age 65).
Died at Franklin St; Buried on January 13, 1916 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 16398, Section DD of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
(So should be recorded in the first Qtr)

BMD records for the whole of 1916 only have one Joseph Swift aged 49 years and that is in the March Qtr. Volume 9C page 547.

There are only 3 deaths registered in the March Qtr of 1916. For the Whole of England.

Deaths Mar 1916 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Swift Joseph 19 Ecclesall B. 9c 454
Swift Joseph 49 Ecclesall B. 9c 547
Swift Joseph 61 Hayfield 7b 1007

Further to this, as a child, I visited the cemetery with my Father, and along with subsequent family conversations, always understood that my Grandfather, and Great Grand parents were all buried in the same family grave.

I live in Australia so am not able to do more research.

Re: Burial Records

Hi Margaret,

I was just coming into the Forum after reading your mail as I knew Tony would be right on to it. LOL.

There are three Joseph Swifts listed on FreeBMD for 1916.

March qtr aged 49
June qtr aged 65
Dec qtr aged 59.

Do you have the death cert that would prove it was him in the March qtr.........

Re: Burial Records

Like Brian Said,

It all looks as if the mistake is with City Rd and only his age...

If you are happy with that so be it.

BUT to prove it for sure and for City Rd you would need the Death Certificate.

You mentioned to me that the Swifts came from Ecclesfield.

I have just looked at both the 1871 & 1881 census.

I used Joseph Swift born 1868 as the keyperson.

I brought up the following.

1871 census.
22 Porter St, Sheffield. (Eccles Parish St Simon)
William Swift h.m. 31 File Forger born Painsthorpe Nr Leeds
Sarah wife aged 26 Norton Yks.
Hannah dau 4 born Sheffield
Joseph sons aged 3 born Sheffield
Ellen dau aged 1 born Sheffield.
Frederick Hutchinson boarder unmarried aged 17 File Cutter born Sheffield.

************************************************************

If this is the correct family Painsthorpe is 4 miles east of York.
On the '81 census it gives his birthplace of Palesthorpe.

Looks like the right family with Sarah and Frederick being brother and sister.

Hope this helps.

Re: Burial Records

Yes thank you Elaine you have the correct family.
I am in no doubt as to the year my grandfather was born or died. I am just trying to determine where he is buried.

For my own purposes a death certificate would confirm what I already know plus the cause of death.

The birth certificate for the 65 year old Joseph Swift, registered in the 2nd quarter of 1916 could be more enlightening as it would confirm his actual death date.

I also noted that the 65 year old Joseph Swifts death is registered in Sheffield, whereas my grandfathers death is registered in Ecclesall B.
Franklin Street was also in the Ecclesall B Registration area. I understand though, that the death may not always be registered in the place they actually occur.

Regards

Margaret
