I am feeling particularly miserable - after a visit from a distant relative I now find I have spent years going down the wrong track. Just a simple mistake with a mother and I have made a huge mistake. All this has happened because an elderly relative gave me the name of their grandmother and it was wrong!!!
Thankfully this other relative had loads more information which verified the new 'mother'.
A few wasted pounds on certificates but now I have more hours of fun trying to find the new ancestors so not all bad!!!
Sue
Ever the optimist- what a positive way of viewing the situation.
Have fun.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Sympathy needed
My Deepest Sympathy Sue, how much out was the name in question ie was the surname correct and first name wrong or have you got to trace a whole new name etc. Something fishy might be on the cards if an elderly relative gave you a wrong name as they might not want you to unearth a family secret - the plot thickens. If you get stuck I will try and assist. John

Re: Sympathy needed
It was the first name and fortunately my elderly relative remembered that the woman in question remarried and the name. Unfortunately it means that about 6 generations from Scarborough weren't ours. Its not helped by the fact the surname is Booth. I have managed to trace a Booth who I think is mine!!!
I deleted my tree from Ancestry as it was such a disaster! Will start again.
Dont forget if we can be of asistance post any posers!!!!!

Re: Sympathy needed
Hi Sue,
Don't worry, we've all made fools of ourselves at some time, we've all gone down blind alleys too.
My father had 3 names (first and surname) by the time he was Baptised so you can imagine how many false leads I followed.
Even now, I still look at my tree and wonder if it's right, and think it may all have been a waste of time but, it's good fun and not life threatening is it. You're no different from any of us, welcome to the funny farm!
Regards,
Marlene
