help needed in finding samuel horrabin's parentage.
Samuel Horrabin. born 1821/1822. Attercliffe-cun-Darnall, Sheffield.
The only find I have from indexes is written;-
Horrabin,Samuel Lockwood.{of sheffield]., born 1821-05-27. Baptised August 26, 1821, by E Goodwin at Sheffield Parish Church-etc. parentss name Ann &- {spinster]. {samuel semms to be illegitamate].
Could someone please advise me what legal parish records required. Was the mother required to give her surname 1st ie Horrabin, or was she required to give the fathers name 1st ie Horrabin. I am hoping that this will tell me which parent the name Horrabin belongs to.

Re: samuel

It is unusual for the incumbant to enter a father's name in the baptism register of an illegitimate child. When I have come across this it is usually a note at the end stating that the reputed father was (name of father)

This entry states that Samuel Lockwood was the son of Ann HORRABIN a spinster. Lockwood being his 2nd christian name.

It was common practice to give a child the reputed father's surname as a 2nd christian name, but it could also be the maiden name of his grandmother.

There is an earlier baptism for another child of Ann HORRABIN, Born 20 Aug 1814 baptised 18 Sep 1814, Hannah daughter of Ann HORRABIN spinster. She appears with Samuel on the 1841 census

Did Ann die after having Samuel there is the following burial at Attercliffe Christ church
HORRABIN Ann aged 22 of Attercliffe buried 28 Aug 1821

Re: samuel

Can't resist this but the only Horrabins I've heard of are off The Archers- stay away from that Clive!

Re: samuel

don't know any Horrabins? ... but have you heard of Japhet Noah and Mrs Mopps?

Elaine - any idea what the Woodhouse connection is with the Horrabins? Cartoonist James Frances Horrabin's dad was James Woodhouse Horrabin (born 1858) James W's mum is one of my Hancock tribe.

Re: samuel Horrabin

Hi Heather,

James Woodhouse Horrabin's parents were Samuel & Harriet Hancock
as you though. Married in Rotherham in 1852.

I can not see a likely Hancock - Woodhouse marriage but there probably is one.

The three census I have looked at seems to put them in the Crookes/Broomhill area with Samuel being a Silver Smith.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if they were Methodists so maybe not too easy to trace.

Just for the heck of it tonight as I am sure there's "nowt ont" telly will have a look to see if I can turn anything up.
The bits between my teeth Heather. LOL.

Take care.

Elaine.

Re: samuel/ to Angela T

Thanks a million Angela. I have spent approx.,30hrs on 'a brick wall' search unfortunately, trying to connect a Jopseph Horrabin with the birth of a Samuel. [down as father on Samuels wedding certificate]. Thanks to your guidance, I can now do more productive research.
Regards Anne.
