TURNER family of Bradfield

Hi, Hoping you nice folks out there will be able to help me. Matthew Turner was born in 1852 in Bradfield and his mother was called I think was called Sarah. I have found him in 1861 and Sarah was a widow. In 1851 of course he would not be on but using Henry managed to find the family still in Bradfield. However Sarah was still a widow so Now the hard part. Can anyone try and find Sarah Turner and family for me in 1841 please hoping she is with her husband. Many thanks John

Re: TURNER family of Bradfield

1861 piece 3460 folio 105 page 10 boobed though as just noticed he is grandson of Sarah. nevertheless if I can find Sarah in 1841 it might help me find his parents. Might have to take a trip to Bradfield Archives. John

Re: TURNER family of Bradfield

I think this could be the family in 1841 (from the index on this site):

(Piece #1335/14, folio 39b, enumeration district 34.)
Turner, Matthew of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 40 years.
Turner, Sarah of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 45 years.
Turner, Elizabeth of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 18 years.
Turner, Elias of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 15 years.
Turner, Joseph of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 13 years.
Turner, Sarah of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 9 years.
Turner, Henery of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 8 years.
Turner, Eli of Matthew St, Sheffield North. Aged 6 years.

'Elias' becomes 'Elisha'(or something similar) in 1851.

This *could* be the father buried back in Bradfield:
TURNER Matthew 2 Jun 1843 Workhouse 44y

Re: TURNER family of Bradfield

Hugh, Many thanks. I think you could be correct on this. Matthew being her husband and either an older son gort married and had Matthew in 1851 or a daughter who was not married and had Matthew in 1851. I have emailed Bradfield Archives to see if they will be willing to check their records for me to see if they can find a Baptism for Matthew 1851. Will post details if they find anything. John

Re: TURNER family of Bradfield

The 1871 census shows that Gershon (3 months old in 1861) was the son of the daughter Sarah Ann (by then married to George BERRISFORD).

Matthew could also be her son.

Gershon is buried at St Thomas, Brightside:
TURNER Gershon 19 Apr 1893 Grimesthorpe,41 Hunsley St

George and Sarah Ann BERRISFORD are buried at Oughtibridge Ascension:
BERESFORD Sarah Ann 21 Apr 1872 Middlewood 42
BERRISFORD George 16 Nov 1879 Sheffield 48

Again many thanks Hugh. Gershon seems a strange name have you any idea where it could have originated from and do you think it should have been Gershwin? John

Re: TURNER family of Bradfield

I hadn't come across the name before but Gershon and Gershom appear to be old testament names. Judging from the GRO entries I am guessing that it often appears in Jewish families.

Thank you Hugh. That could be interesting if the family were Jewish. I will get in touch with my colleague to see if he has heard of a possible Jewish connection. John
