I have read that photographs of asylum patients were taken from 1917 onwards. I have paid Sheffield Archives for research into an ancestor that was in Middlewood between 1899 and 1917. Would I have been told if there was a photograph with his records? Does anyone know if it was just photographs of new patients or existing ones?
I and 3 others transcribed the admission registers.
I have also seen some of the case papers before they were subject to the freedom of information act. Not all cases carry a photograph.
If the archives have already supplied you with the information you requested then I would enquire as to whether a photograph existed. They are the only people who can answer this.
A photograph of my friends Gran was available during her stay. They were not necessarily taken when the patients were admitted.
