Chapel / Church

Hello.. I'm looking for a church that is situated going uphill thru' Oughtibridge , just before Bradfield. I understand that it is no longer in use . I went to search for a member of my family who was buried there. The grave yard is very well kept and I found the grave that I needed. On the Notice board outside the building it just says Bradfield Parish and no name. A lady tending a grave said she thought it was called Burtin...but so far I've found nothing with that name...I would appreciate any help Regards Dee

Re: Chapel / Church

Hi Dee,

I have had a look at Google Earth and I am presuming its not the C of E Church in Oughtibridge (Church of the Ascension) Church St Oughtibridge.

1. Oughtibridge Wesleyan Reform Church.
Baptisms 1838 to 1966. (No addy given so it could be a private house now.)

2.Zion Chapel, Langsett Rd South, Oughtibridge.

Hope you can work it out from this information.

Re: Chapel / Church

Hi Dee, Looking at a modern map off outibridge,There are two churches on or just off church st,but if you continue up church st it changes its name to burton lane could this be the name the lady told you and that road would eventually take you to high bradfield, its on the corner off burton lane and boggard lane looks a bit remote,it has a cross and says cemetary so i assume its a chapel and cemetary, the postcode is S35(but may have changed as this a to z is from 1996,hope this is off some help.Bye MJB.

Re: Chapel / Church

Hi Dee A bit more info for you, looking at an early o/s map it looks like Bertin/Berkin House may have stood where the cemetary now is,its difficult to tell as they spread name about but thats like the name the lady told you.Bye MJB.

Re: Chapel / Church

Although most people call it Burton it is actually Burtin Road cemetery.

I have been to it on a few occasions and it is beautifully kept compared to some of the cemeteries.

Re: Chapel / Church

Re the chapel you refer to - it is called Birtin Cemetery - it is owned and maintained by Bradfield Parish Council and I look after all the grave/wall niche records for that place.
If you e-mail me on: archives@bradfield-yorks-pc.gov.uk I will be able to provide you with the information you are looking for.
