When I looked for Edward on the 1881 census, one entry stood out, although it doesn't confirm the Sheffield place of birth,it is interesting.
Have a look at Piece 4618,folio 127 page 37.
There are regular issues with stated places of birth, and they often change,on various census dates- for the exact same person.
Kind regards Brian H.

John - just so you don't miss it,I rest my case.

Hi Zoe
I am goiing to put a spanner in the works here and suggest Edward Jones wasn't born in Sheffield.
Referring to the 1881 census that Brian suggests, it says the Jones family is living in Thorncliffe Lane, Ecclesfield.

Edward Jones 40 blast furnace manager b.Montgomershire
Emma Jones 41 b.Marmun green Staffordshire
Edward Jones 9 b. Eston Yorks
George Jones 6 b.Ecclesfield
Elizabeth Jones 18 b.Bilston, Staffs
Emma J. Jones 16 b. Willinghall, Staffs
Benjamin Hamer 69 boarder b.Bilston, Staffs
piece 4618 folio 127 page 37

I noticed that Emma the mother, the elder children and the boarder were all born in Staffordshire which is the Midlands. I think that BENJAMIN HAMER maybe Emma's father. I found this wedding in Wolverhampton -which is not too far away.
EDWARD JONES
EMMA HAMER Dec 1860 6b 796 Wolverhampton

Going back to your Edward Jones-as Brian mentioned the birthplace in the 1881 census is not clear- could he have been born in ASTON near Birmingham in Warwickshire but spent most of his childhood in the Sheffield area?
I have found several births in Aston that could match

EDWARD JONES Dec 1872 Aston 6d 362
EDWARD HENRY JONES Sep 1873 Aston 6d 282
EDWARD JONES Mar 1874 Aston 6d 410
EDWARD JONES Mar 1875 Aston 6d 269

I may be completely wrong here and someone may be able to prove it but it could be a lead. I couldn't find Edward's birth in Sheffield .
Regards
Sue

Zoe- just bringing this post over the page, to your last post.
Kind regards Brian H.

Re: Edward Jones

Hi Zoe
Yes, your Edward's parents are likely to be Edward and Emma Jones. Emma's father is Bejamin Hamer. It looks like the births I found in Aston are wrong and the ones in Guisborough are a better match to the baptism record.
Glad we all could help and hope you can find the correct birth certificate.
Regards
Sue

Re: Edward Jones

Bravo! and in particular - Brava!

Re: Edward Jones

Thankyou to everyone, how do I go about finding the right birth cert,

Re: Edward Jones

Hi Zoe
You will have to take a chance on ordering one or both of the birth certificates I mentioned earlier

EDWARD JONES Jun 1871 Guisborough 9d 471
EDWARD JONES Dec 1871 Guisborough 9d 469

As Edward was baptised in May the first birth looks promising.
It says on freebmd that Guisborough registration district existed to 1936 so I think the best way would be to order through the GRO. It costs £9.25.

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Make sure at the bottom of the first page you state you know the GRO reference and enter it on the second page(for the first birth it is Volume 9d Page 471).

Hope this helps
Regards
Sue

Re: Edward Jones

Hopefully this is the Edward I am searching for, and I truly thankyou for all your help, if this is him what would have made him more from Guisborough to Wales as you know he was married in Newtown Wales in 1899.

Re: Edward Jones

Hi
I think he didn't in the Guisborough area for long and spent most of his childhood in the Ecclesfield area. His father came from Wales, so maybe he had relatives he visited there and decided to stay and work. You might never know.
Regards
Sue

Re: Edward Jones

Zoe
Edwards's father was from Wales,so probably this and his family connections to Wales, were a big influence.
Job opportunities are often a good reason to move to another area.
Kind regards Brian H.

Have you seen the public tree on Ancestry ?.
I notice that the tree on Ancestry has Edward H Jones b 1873 Sheffield, father down as Henry Jones b 1847 ,and mother Hannah b 1842.
I notice that on the 1911 - census you mention showing Edward H Jones it sates that the marriage has lasted 13 years, this would mean a marriage in 1898.
Kind regards Brian H.
