Murder 1836

I have just been on the British Newspaper Archives website and found the following about a probable relative -
"Yorkshire Gazette 9/1/1835 - Committed to the Castle. John Cox of Ecclesfield, filesmith, charged with feloniously killing and slaying John Fairhist"
Starngely there is no other entries, particularly in Sheffield papers.
Can anyone assist with where I should go next.
What is the Castle? Where would I find any criminal reports/records?

Re: Murder 1836

Hello Michael

I believe the castle would have been York

There is no mention of him being hanged in David Bentleys "The Sheffield Hanged 1750-1864"

I will check some other publications of the era

Re: Murder 1836

I found a report in the Sheffield Independent which has the names as John COE and John FAIREST. The report, on the same day as the Yorkshire Gazette one, is of the inquest, and is headed "Manslaughter at Oughtibridge".

Coe was acquitted at the Spring Assizes.

Re: Murder 1836

I've just checked the 1841 census and it looks like it's not mine.
Mine is John Cox of Ecclesfield, but there is a John Coe at Oughtibridge and it appears it is him that was involved.
The fly in the ointment was the initial entry stating Cox of Ecclesfield. Rather odd really as neither Cox or Ecclesfield get any mention in the full reports.
Anyway thanks once again.
Thought for one minute I had found out of the ordinary, but alas not,
