Lochbie House, Hornsey Rise, London

Does anyone have any idea about the use of Lochbie House or what it was? I have located two ancestor deaths at this place one in 1871 and the other in 1874.

Thank you

Re: Lochbie House, Hornsey Rise, London

Hi Marie

I did a Google search but can't find mention of a Lochbie House in the Sheffield area. Most of the entries seem to be for a Lochbuie House but this is in the Western Isles.

Can you give the names of your ancestors who died there so I can do a census look up on the address, where I can work out the area to look in.

regards, Ann

Re: Lochbie House, Hornsey Rise, London

Hello Ann

The ancestors are 1. Edward Leighton (abt 1804 - 22 Nov 1874). Edward was married to Frances Sanderson (1801 - 23 Sept 1882); mother Mary Jowett and father William Sanderson. Edward was a Dissenting Minister and as yet I have no idea what that really means nor which religion that includes.

2. Thomas Oats (1792 - 18 Nov 1871) married to Charlotte Sanderson (1796 - 1877)(same parents as Frances above.

Thank you very much
warm regards

Re: Lochbie House, Hornsey Rise, London

Hi Marie

From a search of newspapers I suspect Lochbie House was a large private house.

bradford Observer 7 September 1865
Crossley - Oates. Aug 31 at the Park Chapel, Hornsey, by the Rev John Corbin, Joseph Crossley Esq., of Broomfield, Halifax to Elizabeth, widow of Edward H Oates Esq of Charlestown, Carolina, and daughter of the Rev Edward Leigton of Lochbie House, Hornsea Rise Middlesex.

His death in 1874 was reported in both the Manchester Times and the Bury and Norwich Post both of which refer to Lochbie House.

London Standard 3 February 1879
Auction of Lochbie House, Crouch-Hill Hornsea Rise. Contents include grand piano, carpets, beds, several tons of coal etc.

I have found this house on an 1895 Town Plan of London at http://www.old-maps.co.uk. It was on the southern corner of the junction of Crouch Hill and Warltersville Road (the 1895 map and the 1871 census spell this road like this, Google Maps says Waltersville).

The site now has a block of flats on it, but a nearby house called Brambledown, which immediately follows Lochbie House in the 1871 census, does still exist, with old but post-1895 houses either side.

The coordinates of Lochbie at Old-Maps are 530340 187677

Brambledown appears to have been a smaller house than Lochbie but with larger grounds. Since 1895 Heathville Road has been built across the Brambledown gardens.

My ancestors are also Edward Leighton and Frances, through their son James Bennett Leighton, then my grandfather Norman Edward Leighton. Hopefully I can get some further info on both the Leighton and Sanderson sides of the family.I'm originally from New Zealand now living in Australia. Many thanks

Robert Leighton.

Re: Lochbie House, Hornsey Rise, London

Hi, with regards to Dissenting Minister he would be a Non-conformist minister in other words a minister who had left the Church of England i.e Methodist etc. Hope this helps to understand, if Reverend White picks this up he will no doubt give chapter and verse. If you look at :-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Dissenters

It gives a little more clarity.Regards Barry

Re: Lochbie House, Hornsey Rise, London

Thanks so much Barry; when I first posted I think I had just started on family history but have now found that many of my ancestors were recorded as dissenters.

Kind regards
