Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

I know this post will be deleted because etater wants to be politically correct.
Before some say it; "that is what our military is fighting for, freedom of religion," but are they are not only fighting for my freedom to live and practice my religion. This Muslim took away 13 people's right to Practice their chosen religion.

If Islam (sp) had their way, we would not have a choice.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

All I know is that the trust within the military has been severely broken due to this animal of a man! The military has a Chain of Command and JAG (legal help for the military). He was a Psychiatrist and a Major, he definatly was smart enough to know to use the Chain of Command! This animal took it upon himself to open fire, kill and wound innocent people. I just read www.cnn.com and the report said there was no friendly fire at Ft. Hood. I have questions and questions galore. The military has them, too.

I notice that his family says he was harassed. I notice that the people he turned to off-post made assumptions, instead of notifying his Chain of Command. Also, he went to a civilian lawyer and possibly a civilian police officer when he reported his car was allegedly keyed by someone. The main thing that puzzles me is at Walter Reed, where he received a poor performance evaluation. That was within the military. Civilians don't always report things to the military. You better believe, we, as U.S. Americans, will stand and require them to for preventive measures.

People can go through different circumstances in life, but when you're in the military, you activate your Chain of Command. You use JAG and you can also use military Chaplains. You don't go off shooting people! I have no excuses for him. He took away so much!

I keep praying for the Soldiers and even more for the Soldiers in combat in Iraq & Afghanistan. When you are at War, you have to trust your fellow Soldier. Please, may God be with them, their families, their friends and their communities! Please don't let the Soldiers get so distracted over all of this unnecessary bloodshead by one of their own, the animal, and let them stay focused on the mission so they can come back alive! Just remember Soldiers, those of us at home, We've got your backs, your families and your friends.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

It has now come out that this man had ties to, and had been communicating with Muslim extremists for several years and the Army, as well as the intelligence agencies, were aware of it.

I guess this whole thing is George Bush's fault.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

I do not trust Muslims. If they are serious in the religion and they practice it, then they will always want to die at war because that is what their "leader" has instructed them that God wants them to do. They believe if they die while fighting that they will go be with God no matter what. Read THEIR bible the Q'ran

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

This needs to be treated as a act of terrisom. Plain and simple. But man-child obama is afraid to call coin it as terrisiom.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Remember shooting of late-term abortionist George Tiller. Killed by religious jihad by fundamentalist crusader. Have anyone read any of the big 5 saying jihad, fundamentalist, crusaders, extremists, terrorism, zealot, Taliban, Hamas, al-Qaeda. No, it's not what they consider terrorist. Only christians are considered terrorists. Only now are they hinting at the idea this guy might be a terrorist, but most are saying we pushed him to it.

The signs were there, but noone wanted to act. If anyone did they would be sued. We are so politically correct, that we cann't protect ourselves. So welcome to progressive America, hope your happy.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Tomorrow is Veterans Day...please Support all of our Soldiers! To me, this animal used Psychological Warfare. He knew what he was doing. The 9/11 Terrorists used Psychological Warfare.

On Veterans Day, I always remember the Soldiers, their families and friends. I always remember the victims of 9/11, their families and friends, too.

As an Army Brat, I felt so safe living on post. Dad would go to the field or on unaccompanied tours, and the MPs (military police) made us feel safe.

As an adult, when I lived in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, I remember it scared the living heck out of me. I went to the first PTA meeting at a military school on post, and was told by a civilian police officer, that there were 21 gangs there. They would go on and off post. I always thought we were safe with the MPs. I also thought, we have a U.S. Army Intelligence Center here. Never in my wildest dreams, did I imagine that. I kept my guard up, knowledge was my safety alert. While I lived there, nothing happened, luckily. I still went out sightseeing and had fun. Nothing can or will take away our Freedom.

And now, I don't know what to think since this animal did this. I will always err on the side of caution. I am so grateful that the Fort Hood, TX alert system, across post, let people know, so that they could get to a safe zone as quickly as possible, preventing more deaths.

In America, we still have our Freedom, thanks to our Soldiers! We will stay vigilant and we will enjoy it. Land of the Free, Home of the Brave!

Thank you E-Tater, for the very nice American and Soldier graphics! Thanks for Supporting our Soldiers!

I usually don't add my opinion in threads but, I've known some d a m n good men that served their country. So, perhaps this is the one time that I will tell you what I'm thinking.

I like most everyone here grew up as Christian. In all my years on this Earth, I have yet to trust anyone that wears a towel on their head and commits atrocities while systematically/robotically chanting "Allah Akbar!" Killing in the name of their God. How noble. They are told by their "leader" Muhammad (the pedophile) that they are guaranteed x amount of virgins should they die a by the enemies hand... they become a martyr.

Well, I hope they follow that initiative and somehow a civil war breaks out, all in the name of Allah.

Their leader, and who exactly is that

Ignorance is bliss people, christians are just as radical as muslims. Everytime you see an abortion doctor getting shot, or their office getting bombed that's christian terrorism. No where in the Quran does it say to kill people, just like no where in the bible is says to kill people. Religious nutjobs are just that nutjobs and will interpret what they want out of either. Timothy McVeigh by the way Christian Terrorist, Eric Rudolph, John Salvi, Paul Hill(the preacher who killed a doctor and told him it was gods will) where have you heard that before.
Muslim people as a whole are peaceful people, just like when sane christians hear of killing in the name of god they cringe so do people of the muslim faith.

That said maybe some of you should read up, instead of assuming you know about a people. Reading this thread, bigot and racists come to mind.

Nice spiel. Now, please enlighten me. Give me an example of "peaceful" Islam. Just one. That's all I am asking.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

You really can't be that ignorant, so you think every islamic person is out to kill infidels.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Islamic peace is an oxymoron. I ask you to provide one example and all you could come up with was name calling. I think I've said enough. Point proven.

The Real Truth About the Muslim Religion.

Islam …

1) Is a mind-control and information-control cult founded by a murderer, torturer, brigand, rapist and pedophile called Mohammed. The mind-control and information-control aspects require that all criticism be silenced.

2) Is Mohammed’s personality cult. Has no foundations other than Mo’s murderous rantings (Koran and Hadith). The Koran consists of two conflicting parts – Meccan and Medinan (peaceful and violent respectively). The Medinan stuff supersedes (‘abrogates’) the Meccan stuff. Muslims act Medinan, but quote Meccan verses to the gullible infidels.

3) Claims to worship the same God as Christians and Jews, but in fact worships Allah – a demonic channelling through Mohammed’s psychopathic ego. The Death Cult mixes garbled versions of Christian and Jewish scriptures with pagan practices such as moon and meteorite-worship, and cut-throat blood sacrifice of animals and non-believers.

4) Has no rational, philosophical nor theological basis, and the whole belief-system is contradicted by science, philosophy, commonsense, human decency and internal inconsistency.

5) Cannot withstand rational criticism. Can only spread and maintain itself by ignorance, illiteracy, war, terrorism, and intimidation. Islam has bloody borders and cannot co-exist peacefully with other belief systems. Winston Churchill said that Islam in a man is as dangerous as hydrophobia (rabies) in a dog.

6) Has a superstitious dread of images of pigs, crosses, Buddhas, Saint George (and his flag) and of course Motoons.

7) Regards Islamic women as semihuman. Wife-beating, incest and child abuse (including mufa’khathat or ‘thighing’ – the ritual abuse of infants) are encouraged.

8) Regards all unbelievers (Kaffirs, Kuffar, Kufrs, Kafirs) as ritually unclean subhumans to be killed, subjugated, enslaved, exploited or parasitised. Kafirs are described by the Arabic word ‘najis’ – literally ‘filth’. That’s why Muslim hatred of Kafirs is intrinsic to their ‘religion’. A Kafir doesn’t need to DO anything to offend a Muslim, his very existence is enough of an affront.

9) The ethical system applies only to Muslims. Allah encourages rape, pillage, extortion and enslavement of non-Muslims. Morality does not extend beyond the global gang (ummah). Muslim ethics are the ethics of the Mafia.

10) Allah’s followers are motivated by hatred, greed and lust. There is no love, mercy or compassion. Allah is vindictive, unpredictable, capricious and devious – “Allah leads astray whom he pleases”.

11) The only religion NOT founded on The Golden Rule. Morality is based on Mohammed’s example. If Mohammed did it then it’s OK for all Muslims. Hence the encouragement of rape, pillage, subjugation and murder of non-believers and the institutionalised pedophilia prevalent throughout Muslim society (justified by Mohammed’s activities with Ayesha, his child sex-slave – see and listen to http://islamcomicbook.com/lyrics1.htm).

12) All human relations are defined by Dominance/Subjugation. Muslims have schizoid inferiority/superiority complexes. (A well-balanced Muslim is one with a chip on each shoulder). They respect strength but despise compromise as weakness. Appeasement invites more aggression. The only political system which has been strong enough to subjugate Islam is Stalinism.

13) Polygamy ensures alpha-males get extra women, leading to a shortage of women for the betas. Beta-males must either jerk off (a sin leading to hell), or form dog-packs and rape or capture kafir women as booty in a razzia, or else self-destruct in the presence of infidels then they can screw 72 mythical virgins in Allah’s bordello in the sky (see and listen to http://islamcomicbook.com/lyrics3.htm. Beta-males are often encouraged by their relatives to become suicide bombers because of the belief that such murderous ‘martyrs’ will be able to intercede with Allah to take 70 of their relatives to paradise with them.

14) Lying and deception of infidels (taqiyya) is encouraged. This may take many forms, including outright lies, feigned moderation, and condemnation of terrorist attacks to the Kaffir while rejoicing with fellow Muslims. All Muslims need to regard themselves as victims of some group of Kafirs so they can harbor grudges against them and against Kafirs in general. Individuals may appear law-abiding and reasonable, but they are part of a totalitarian movement, and must be considered potential killers who can flip in an instant (SJS -’Sudden Jihad Syndrome’).

15) Muslims are forbidden to befriend Kaffirs except for purposes of deceit or where conversion may be possible.

16) The Koran is Allah’s final word and cannot be changed or challenged. To do so is punishable by death. Consequently, the Death Cult can never change or be reformed. The instructions to murder and rape infidels are just as valid now as the day they were written. Since Islam cannot be modernised, the Muslims are attempting to Islamise modernity. This requires spreading Islam in the West and simultaneously preventing any criticism of the cult by intimidation and PC legislation to curtail freedom of expression.

17) Treaties and agreements with Kaffirs are made to be broken (Hudna). The word of a Muslim to a Kafir counts for nothing in the eyes of Allah. Allah is The Father Of Lies.

18) The world is divided between Dar-al-Islam and Dar-al-Harb (the domain of war, the Kufr lands). Muslims living in Dar-al-Harb must work to disrupt their host nations until these can be brought into Dar-al-Islam.

19) Muslims have no obligation to their host nations and in fact are encouraged to parasitise them. Welfare fraud, identity theft, forgery etc are endemic in Western Muslim populations, and serious crime against Kaffirs is regarded as normal and justified. Extortion rackets against Kafirs are mandated by the Koran (‘jizya’ is the Arabic term for ‘protection money’ payable by Jews and Christians to Muslims).

20) The attack on the host nation isn’t just against its religion and economy, but is aimed at its very cultural identity. Islam is a complete system, including a culture, which Muslims regard as superior (despite all evidence to the contrary) to other cultures. Muslims are therefore required to destroy the symbols of ‘Jahiliya’ (sometimes sp. Jahiliyya) – non-Muslim culture. In the East this has included destruction of Hindu temples and Christian churches and replacement with mosques, and destruction of Buddhist artwork and universities and replacement with heaps of rubble. This process of cultural replacement is now beginning in the West.

Bob, ignorance is wonderful isn't it

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Interesting. In Islam prominent countries, what classifies as "crime"? We all know that marrying a nine year old doesn't classify. Another question while you're on your pedestal, how many "crimes" in Islamic countries are actually reported? "Reported" does not include taking some veiled woman out in the desert and blowing her head off with an AK-47 because she spoke to a married man.

I guess if Preachers and preist can do it so can they. Just so you know I don't believe in any religion. In my opinion it's the root of all evil in the world. Religion has caused more termoil in the world than anything else.

Not equal are those Believers who sit [at home], except those who are disabled. And those who strive and fight [jihad] in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah has granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit [at home]. Unto all [in faith] has Allah promised good; But those who strive and fight has He distinguished above those who sit [at home] by a great reward. -Ranks specially bestowed by Him and Forgivenss and Mercy. For Allah is oft-forgiving. Most Merciful. (surah 4:95-96)

Those who have left their homes, and were driven out therefrom, and suffered harm in My Cause, and fought and were slain, 'Veryily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath;-A reward from Allah and from Allah is the best of rewards. (surah 3:195)

Fighting is prescribed upon you, and you dislike it. But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and that you love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knows and you know not...Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter.Nor willl they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. (surah 2:216-17)

MUHAMMAD himself gave the example for jihad (fighting; holy war). There was no governmental call for warfare, only individual desire that led to the greatest rewards in heaven. Ethical values seemed to play little or no role. Whatever the muslimsdid was justified, since their cause was just. Muslims believed tha they received forgiveness for all their sins only by fighting in jihad. Is it any wonder, then, that holy war coninues to be a prophetic call?

The Hadith explains that no muslim who kills an infedel deserves death.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

You still did not answer my question "?".

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

ummm you are correct, however few use the Hadith. Only some of the Sunni's and ibadi's believe in this, The Shi'a don't they use the writings of the three Muhammads.

Admin, Kareem Abdul Jabar. If you actually think all muslims are radical killers i won't respond to you anymore.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

I ask you to provide the actual reported crimes stats for Islamic countries. Surely, with your power of Google, you could do that yet, you have not. You've merely called names. You say: "Just so you know I don't believe in any religion. In my opinion it's the root of all evil in the world." Why would you so fiercely defend ANY religion if you actually believed that?
Was the notion of going against someone associated with etater so strong that you couldn't help yourself? I've noticed with your postings that anyone that is associated with etater or agrees with the owner or admin, you are strongly against.

Is etater your Islam? Do you (as you charge us with) hate something or someone so bad because of their association that you have to oppose their every view? It's just an honest question. It deserves an honest answer.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Wow, I disagree with everyone on etater. That's laughable, is etater my islam what the hell are you even talking about.

I honestly believe that a majority of the islamic nation is not radical jihadist. Now if you wanna twist it then twist it. It just so happened that I believe that and you don't so you personally attack me. You let your beliefs cloud your judgement, "I have yet to trust anyone that wears a towel on their head and commits atrocities while systematically/robotically chanting "Allah Akbar!" Killing in the name of their God. How noble" you said that.

As for crime rates, do you really want that if so which countries do you want and i'll get them for you. Give me a list and i'll get on it. Afghanistan does not release crime rates so you have to leave that one off haha

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

There is one small snag with the presentation of crime rates of islamic countries. Religious crimes are not included in the studies. That seperate them. To actually remotely compare you have to look at both cival and religous numbers. Even then they are unclear. Males can do practically anything up to killing there whole family for anything from disrespect, to adultry, and it;s considered being faithful.

And please don't compare 18 abortion workers deaths and 41 abortion clinic bombings(32 had no christian lies)in the last 40 years to the millions of acts of islam. It would be best to compare our uncivilized history of the middle ages to there modern day actions. But then you would have to agree that what they do is uncivilixed.

Millions? It's not only abortion clinics it's killing of gays and blacks in the name of christianity.

Blacks and gays too? I think you listen to Rev. Wright. Is there anyone the Christians don't kill. Apparently all religions are murderous terrorists. Wonder if that includes atheists.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Listen, if you want to compare individual's names of Christians that don't kill, I would be happy to do so all night. I can easily do so. I'll just pick up the phone book and start with A. You miss the point though. You are so preoccupied with being right that you over look the obvious.

Let's make this easier for you: Name a branch or denomination of Christians that customarily kill in the name of Christ. Now, name a branch of Islam that kills in the name of Allah.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

Oh and Ya'qub Mehrnahad was executed by an Islamic government for merely mentioning that Islam should be peaceful. Help me out here, are you arguing against or for me?

Just go stew in your hatred. Just remember, karma's a b*tch.

I have long been mystified as to why Americans and Canadians do not understand Islam. It is very simple. While most Christians and Jews pay only lip service to their bibles the Muslims believe in the koran with every part of their being. They rise before dawn to pray and they pray five times a day. They mean business in their worship of the false god allah.

They believe in every verse of the koran and the Hadith. But Americns have never read the koran so they are socked by such carnage as was caused at Fort Hood.

So let me quote just a few verses from the koran. Are you ready?

Infidels (unbelievers) are the Muslim’s undoubted enemies (Sura 4:101).
This ideal is instilled in the minds and hearts of Muslim children by their mothers.

Muslims are to besiege them and lie in ambush everywhere” for them.
(Sura 9:5) That’s us they are to besiege because we do not believe in and follow the teachings of Mohammed.

Seize them and put them to death wherever you find them, kill them wherever you find them, seek out the enemies of Islam relentlessly” (Sura 4:90)

I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, Smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger tips of them. (Koran 8:12)

Take not Jews and Christians for friends. They are friends to one another. He who takes them for friends is one of them.” Sura 5:51

Believers, make war on the infidels who are your neighbors and let them find you rigorous. (Sura 9:123).

Allah loves those who “fight for his cause” (Sura 61:3).

If a Muslim does not go to war, Allah will punish him. (Sura 9:39)

Muslims are to be “ruthless to unbelievers but love Muslims (Sura 48:29).

Kill any person you wish if it be a “just cause.” (Sura 6:152)

‘’I have been ordered to fight with people till they say, none has the right to be worshipped but allah ‘’ Hadith 4:196

Mohammed also said, Know that paradise is under the shade of the swords.’’ Hadith vol. 4:73

On July 4th 2002 a Muslim taxi driver in Los Angeles shot to death two people at the El Al terminal in LAX and three more were wounded. For weeks thereafter Psychologists and Psychiatrists wondered why this apparently peaceful man had killed these people. But the answer was very clearly pinned to his front door that morning. A note on the door said simply “Read the Koran.”

A few years earlier a Muslim soldier Hassan Akbar in Kuwait hurled a grenade into a tent full of American Soldiers. Two officers were killed and 14 injured. Everybody wondered what prompted him to do it. Simple, he had been reading the Koran and he believed those soldiers were his enemies.

So why waste time trying to discover what prompted Major Nidal Malik to open fire at Fort Hood. He was a Muslim and he believed in the koran. The only mystery to me is why the army would allow any Muslim to be a member. The koran clearly states Infidels (unbelievers) are the Muslim’s undoubted enemies. Yes, we Christians and Jews are their enemies. We did not say that, they did.

Is it not enough to remember how many Jews have been killed in Israel by Muslims who boarded their buses and entered their restaurants with bombs? Why is it so hard for our leaders to understand that Muslims are determined to kill unbelievers and take over their countries for their fictitious god allah.

I do not hate the Muslims. In fact I believe they are to be pitied because they are first victims of this terrible cult of war and hatred. I do not suggest that we should start killing Muslims. I do think they need to be controlled in every situation and never given opportunity to serve in our armed forces or police. They consider us their enemies and feel it is their duty to kill anyone who does not bow the knee to allah By the way I have deliberately used lower case for allah, and koran because neither is worthy of capitalization.

I wish that this horrific incident would bring Americans and Canadians back to God. What will it take? Another 9-11? No that didn’t do it either. I don’t know what will. God is never mentioned anymore in our politically correct system because our leaders are afraid of offending those who believe in allah. Yet Muslims shout Allahu Akbar!” Meaning “Our god is greater than your God.” Well I have news for you. Not only is no God greater than our God, but in fact there is no other God but our God. So let’s stand up and fight for Him.

Re: Did being a Muslim play a part in Fort Hood?

I just can't seem to get past how USED TO BE FYI seems to be defending someone who killed due to his religious beliefs OUR people. I understand the idea and command of forgiveness in the Bible but you do not just forget and commend someone for it! The muslims have been the ones for years to do many things to the American people but yet the Americans are supposed to ignore their religion and claim this same religion who basically orders them to kill anyone that is not WITHIN their own muslim faith to as OK? I'm confused to where FYI stands.

Re: this answered that question

FORT WORTH, Texas – An Army psychiatrist who may face the death penalty after the mass shooting at Fort Hood was charged Wednesday with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder relating to the scores of soldiers and two civilian police officers injured in the attack, military officials said.

Maj. Nidal Hasan has already been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder after the Nov. 5 shooting in a building at the Texas Army post where soldiers must go before being deployed. Witnesses said he jumped on a desk and shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — Arabic for "God is great!" Army officials have said he was armed with two pistols, one a semiautomatic capable of firing up to 20 rounds without reloading.

The additional charges come less than 24 hours after Hasan's civilian attorney was notified that the Army plans to evaluate Hasan to test his competency to stand trial as well as his mental state at the time of the shooting.

John Galligan, Hasan's attorney, told The Associated Press that Army officials notified him late Wednesday that the "mental responsibility" exam would take place in the next 45 days. Galligan said the military rejected his objection to the evaluation, although he had pointed out that Hasan remains in intensive care at a San Antonio military hospital recovering from gunshot wounds that left him paralyzed.

"I'm incensed at the way the military is handling this, serving additional charges on my client when he's in the hospital and defense attorneys are not present," Galligan told The AP by phone from his office near Fort Hood, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Worth. "And nobody will tell me what the plans are for the evaluation."

Fort Hood officials did not immediately return a call late Wednesday about the mental exam.

The results of the mental evaluation could prevent Hasan from being sent to death row or even being tried at all, although those scenarios are unlikely, experts say.

The exam is done by a board of mental health professionals to determine whether the suspect had a severe mental illness at the time of the crime; if so, his or her clinical psychological diagnosis; whether that prevented him from knowing at the time that his alleged actions were wrong; and if he is competent to stand trial, according to military law.

The evaluation usually takes several days and involves psychological testing and interviews by the board, said Richard Stevens, an attorney who specializes in defending military cases but is not involved in Hasan's case.

The board can review any evidence presented by prosecutors and defense attorneys, although the exam is closed to everyone except the doctors and Hasan, Stevens said.

"The government often requests a mental evaluation in cases where (insanity) may be the defense, because they want to know sooner rather than later what the doctors will determine about the defendant's mental status so they feel comfortable proceeding," he said.

If the board decides Hasan is not competent to stand trial, he would be hospitalized until he is found competent, Stevens said.

If it deems that Hasan had a severe mental illness but did not lack mental responsibility at the time of the crime, the military must decide whether to proceed with the case or drop the charges and have Hasan discharged from the Army based on his mental illness, Stevens said.

Prosecutors likely would dismiss the case if the board determined that Hasan lacked mental responsibility, because in a trial they would be faced with trying to discredit their own military health professionals, Stevens said.

If the case goes to trial, his defense attorneys can still use the insanity defense, which is rare, Stevens said.

A soldier being acquitted by reason of lacking mental responsibility also is rare and "can create great strains within the military behavioral health care system," according to a 2006 paper by three military doctors in the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. The military didn't establish rules for what to do with such soldiers until 1996, according to the paper.

"He wouldn't remain in a military facility at that point because he would have been found not guilty, so the issue now is his mental state," Stevens said.

If a military jury were to acquit Hasan based on the insanity defense, he would be committed to a medical facility and evaluated to see if he poses a danger to society, Stevens said.

Then at a post-trial hearing, if the exam results revealed that he posed no danger, he could be released back to his Army unit, Stevens said. But the Army likely would have him discharged based on his mental illness and then he would be in the U.S. attorney general's custody, which would also happen if he was deemed a threat, Stevens said.

The attorney general usually asks the state to take over and place him in a mental facility, according to military law. If the state refuses, the attorney general would have him confined to a federal facility.

It's unclear if such a defendant would ever be released, but his case likely would be governed by the rules of the state or federal system on involuntary commitments.

Authorities have not said if they plan to seek the death penalty. If they do, and Hasan is convicted and receives that punishment, he would be sent to death row at the military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

There hasn't been a military execution since 1961, though five men sit on the military's death row at Fort Leavenworth. Before a military execution can be carried out, the president must personally approve. George W. Bush signed an execution order last year for a former Army cook who was convicted of multiple rapes and murders in the 1980s, but a federal judge has stayed that order to allow for a new round of appeals in federal court.
