THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Vocal chords "snapping" back into position?

Okay Jaime,
I was doing the Vocal Chord Stretch - I've done this in my chest voice for years but rarely tried to take it into falsetto.
Yesterday morning, I did it and when I stopped it felt like my vocal chords stuck for a second, and then "snapped back" into position like a rubber band being snapped. I didn't feel any pain or anything - it just kind of freaked me out a little.

I also have a spot just before where...I guess where head voice would begin... and my voice just seems to drop out for a note or two.

I just bought a 61-note Casio keyboard for $100 from a local Chain for $100, so I'm going to start actually writing down what notes I'm hitting and find out exactly where my range is.

I drank a couple of diet Pepsi's earlier, and I'm wondering whether that is what caused it because my throat felt totally aggravated after I drank them. I gave up coffee when I quit smoking, and I was up 30 hours straight, so when I got up yesterday morning I was still worn out....so I was after a caffeine boost.

Needless to say, I won't be drinking those anymore.

But if this "snapping" thing happens again - is it something I should be worried about?

Thanks,
Tim

That sounds like a regular vocal break.

I don't think you should be practicing the vocal cord stretch yet. If you are serious about this routine, then spend about 8 weeks on it first and be really comfortabloe with the Siren up to at leat an E or F above Tenor C. It's not a full voice to falsetto thing. You are stretching te cords really thin with this exercises but not flipping to falsetto. I've never experienced a snapping of the vocal cords like that but I'm assuming it can't be good, so back of of the Vocal Cord Stretch for awhile or don't reach as high as you were.
