THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

A new breathing tip from...me?

Now, some of you are going to think I'm retarded for this, because it might be common sense to you as I explain it. When I first got RYV, it tells you to breathe in through your nose and out through the mouth. I've been doing this, but enough repetition will dry out my nasal passage. So I figured something out. While inhaling through your nose, keep your mouth closed, but inhale as if your mouth was open. I've actually noticed 2 things from this. 1)My inhalation feels more controlled and 2) it doesn't even really feel like I'm breathing through my nose. Therefore, I feel no dryness in my nose afterwards. Here's a WARNING though. When you first start doing this a few times, you'll probably feel a little light-headed, since you're actually pulling in more oxygen than you would if you were just "sniffing." I don't reccommend doing this exercise while driving, but doing it at home or at work has helped me to greatly improve my voice. I honestly hope I've at least helped one person out there. If I have, I've succeeded.

Re: A new breathing tip from...me?

Ya know, you're completely right. I don't have an issue with my nose drying out, but I always had a problem with my my pharynx feeling a bit on the dry side. It feels much more natural to breathe in through the nose like this; the breah feels much more moist. This is a GREAT tip methinks.

Re: A new breathing tip from...me?

Great tip but if you read deeper, I tell you to TRY to breath in through your nose when you can (because you can't do it all the time) to help moisten the air and I also mention that some people strictly prefer mouth breathing. However now that it has been brought to my attention, I should have stated to keep the mouth open because when I take a breath thru my nose, I still leave my mouth open. It just never occured to me to make this statement. I'm sorry, I'll make sure to mention it in the 2nd edition.

Re: A new breathing tip from...me?

Oh trust me Jaime, I've read your entire book. This tip was primarily geared toward the exercises themselves as opposed to performing. I read the reccommended nasal breathing. But sometimes when I'm doing certain breathing exercises of yours, particularly 5-10-20-Pant..., my nose would get so dry that I would HAVE to resort to mouth breathing. This tip simply allows me to do entire breathing regiments without any fryness whatsoever. Don't think for one second that I wouldn't consult the book by the master himself before posing a question. I have complete faith in you sensei.

Re: A new breathing tip from...me?

If you are suffering from nasal dryness, here is my solution.

Go to your local pharmacy and get a bottle of saline nasal spray. Just get the store brand (Eckerds, CVS, Walgreen's, whatever the pharmacy is. I personally just poured the saline solution out. Rinse the bottle out, and I bought a jug of distilled water ($1 for a gallon), and put that in it - and I periodically just mist a little water up my nose.

It works like a champ for me.

Brandon and Skully,

Both great replies. I see now Brandon that you are refrring to the exercises. So, that's cool. You should mist inhale through the sinuses, that's also helpful when the weather is very dry and you end up with nose bleeds because the sinus passages are so dry from the weather, (or air conditioning.
