THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

I've finally have it!!

It's been 3 days now since I'VE DISCOVERED MY WHISTLE REGISTER!!!..sooooo awesome!! The note is super high but quiet. I can bring the pitch down to my head, middle, chest voice with ease (I think it's because of the falsetto slide). I still can't do the transcending tone (DAMMIT!!!!), but that is another story.

It's weird but Jaime is right, there's no other way to explain it. Clamp down and hold a note. I don't know why I'm able to do it know but...I can. Its gotta be something with the flexibility of cords or something. I have been doing a lot of vocal exercises in the past two weeks.

Question 1.... is it my vocal cords or the muscles in my throat that I'm clamping down.

Question 2.... is this bad technique? I read something on http://www.voiceteacher.com/whistle_register.html and apparently there is a wrong way to do it. Is this right? I'd have to admit my vocal cords or throat feels almost completely closed. There seems to be a good amount of pressure where the whistle is being made. Is this damaging? What do you guys think?

Re: I've finally have it!!

It's a combination of the muscles tensing inwards towards the vocal cords to make the cords, "zip" up tightly from the back to the front, until there is only a tiny pinhole for air release. There should not be hardly ANY pressure when you do this, it should dloat out effortlessly. The wrong way to do it is by forcing it loudly, pushing too much air, or really locking your stomach muscles. Yes, there is the power push, but not a whole lot.
