THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Is Straining Alright???

When doing the transcending tone, last night I managed to hit a c above middle C. The transition was pretty smooth. I thought this was cool but it sounded really strained and there was a lot of tension going on. I focused on keeping the larnyx low and the yawning sensation. I don't believe my larnyx was that high. My beginning high note was a strained g above middle C. That g has got easier to hit as a result.

I haven't been doing RYV for too long but I've noticed some of my sessions I'll really be "straining" for my new higher notes. I'd wish I could call it focused work.Is Straining Alright?? Btw, my voice always feels great the next day. Sometimes there is some tightness the next day but is muscles around the larnx, not the actual cords.

Re: Is Straining Alright???

NO NO NO!!! DON"T STRAIN!!! Now, I know toy want to work for higher notes and you will attempt some of them, but as you develop and strengthen the notes you can already reach, you'll suddenly be able to barely hit another note, then another... Yeah, as you reach for a new note, it will sometimes feel uncomfortable, but if you have to really strain to reach it, then you aren't ready. This is a progressive methid and you will get to the next pitch when your voice is ready for it. If you get into the habit of straining, the muscle memory won't develop correctly.

Ok I won't be over zealous. I won't strain I could just use a little patience. The strained sound sounds like crap anyway.
