THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

What the heck am I doing

Hiyas,

Ok um, I received RYV a few days ago and I've read over it a few times and decided to do some of the exercises today. I have a few questions though:

1) Falsetto slide - Do you try and stay in falsetto for as long as possible?

2) Transcending Tone - I'm really not sure about this one...I uploaded a sample of an attempt at

http://members.optusnet.com.au/~t1m/whatthe.mp3

am I on the right track? Hmmm sometimes I think maybe it's too early for me to tackle an exercise like this?

3) Core of resonance - This maybe a stupid question, but I have trouble picturing it? Sometimes I sing an E4-F4 and I picture it relatively high. But then I realise that those notes are around my break area so I should probably be picturing it sitting around my throat area? Is that right?

That's about all the questions I have for now hehe. If anyone could help me it'd be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
Tim

Re: What the heck am I doing

Hey man, wassup. When you do the falsetto slide, yes you try to stay in falsetto as long as possible. You WILL reach a point down low where it changes to full voice, but you want that change to be seemless. It will become easy because on low notes, the cords are open wide anyways, kind of like falsetto on the top end. Just practice smoothing it out. The T.T. exercise will takes TONS of practice. I listened to your clip and you are on the right track, but don't switch from EEE to AY. Keep it the same vowel. What you did was kind of cheating, that is why you could transcend so easily. Stay on A as in PLAY. And use and AH on the falsetto slide. Now the core of resonance is simple once you get used to it. Put your hand on your chest and say "ahhhhh" on a low note. Did you fell that big buzzing in your chest> This is your core and although the whole body will buzz on each pitch, the core center moves up and down as you ascend or descen the scale. I'd suggest reading the book several times to digest it all, then try the 7 week program for doing the exercises. It's one of the Useful Tips towards the back of the book. Hope this helped
