THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Success stories...

Does anyone here have any incredble success stories about their singing?

I ask because I've been practicing a lot (with the help of RYV) and while I do see some results, I have been pretty frustrated with my progress so far, and i'm mainly just looking for some inspiration...

Anyone who went from not being able to sing to being a total singing machine? From singing zero to singing hero so to speak ?

Re: Success stories...

Well I would like to say the exercises work but there is no short cut to becoming a singing monster it takes consistant work and patience. most see improvements in 6 month increments, it takes thousands of repetitions for your muscles to retain and become a natural instinct. When people say things clicked overnight for the most part it is because of repetitive good habits... remember practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect so due dillegence is a must

Re: Success stories...

Thanks! I know it takes tons of practice, but lots of times it seems like people who have success have been singing their whole lives, albeit with poor technique, no training, etc. Don't get me wrong, I do see improvements and i'm still working, Its just very rare that I hear about anyone who goes from not a singer to a singer with awesome ability (a la Jim Gillette).

Re: Success stories...

BTW Matt, thanks for that advice on the "Frustrated" thread! It helped a lot, and I'm definitely overcoming my bridge ever so slowly.

Re: Success stories...

Cool Man, if your going throught the exercises and they are giving you a hard time in spots those are the areas that you need to slow down and concentrate on smoothing out look to release tension in the throat, facial muscle, and more specifically your tongue...the second strongest muscle in your body next to the heart... if your tongue is not relaxed it closes the back of your throat and palatte and absorbs sound and pushes down on your larnyx causing a false sense of strength that cause you to push harder than you have to and will make it hard to access the mix.
Alot of times we go through the exercises and try to sound our best and skip over the subtle adjustments that are going on as we move through the scales .
I'm guilty of it every day the tongue is easy to look over cause the tension slowly creeps into play and we need to find neutral ground while vocalising with exercises... so when you sing for real you have a starting point of refrence you call always go back to. think of it like this Foot ball players don't just go play a game without preparation they work out all week, stretch, practiice, the plays then on sunday they beat the living shit out of their bodys in the real game...the exercises are the strength and stretching preparation before the real game
