THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Jaime--Rasp on Exercise

Jaime,

I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to the exercises tonight, and while I was listening I noticed that your voice seems to have at least a faint rasp to it on all of the exercises.

Are you adding that in, or is it as a result of the exercises?

I'm a little concerned, because I'm primarily training my voice up for church music, baroque period music, and some light operatic songs. Basically I need a –completely- gravel and rasp free sound. Although I also enjoy singing some rock music, and plan to learn how to add rasp, I definitely, definitely can’t in any way have it be naturally there.

Thanks,

Anthony

Re: Jaime--Rasp on Exercise

Anthony,
Everyone's voice is different. I train many people who don't use any rasp at all. I don't really think the audio examples have rasp on them? If there is, it must have beem an unconcious thing. A lot of my videos have the rapy thing becasue a lot of rock singers want to hear that. one of my favorite singers is Steve Perry from journey who's usually pretty clean. I sing nything from them to AC/DC to stuff as soft and clean as Matchbox 20. Don't worry, you won't develop rasp fromthe exercises. Rasp is something that can be created for a vocal infection, it has nothing to do with strengthening the voice via thi9s system

Peace,

JV

Re: Jaime--Rasp on Exercise

I had to hit the sack after writing the last post, but I got a chance to listen to the examples as well as the exercises this morning, and I found that the exercises have the rasp (typically right as you come off a note), but the examples don't.

Wheph. Sorry for the panic mode! [:)) I was just worried because I'm really looking forward to getting to start this thing (this evening, probably).

Re: Jaime--Rasp on Exercise

No worries, that's just my style coming through. I can add rasp without hurting my throat and I tend to get a LOT of singers who want to learn that. But, I have students who sing gospel, blues, pop, country, and of course, metal. This is a system for strengthening the voice as if it were an instrument regardless of what you sing;)
