THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Is this right?

Hi everyone,

Before I ask my question, I would like to say that RYV really works! I bought it this book to become Karaoke champion and I think I might be something more (only time will tell). I started as a skeptic (seriously) and was a really really bad singer. I couldn't sing on key, my voice was weak, I think I was singing from my throat instead of my belly. My friend told me I had a nice tone but I wasn't on key and emotion less. I did not think RYV was going to work for me because I did not have any natural talents in singing at all.

To be honest I've had RYV since last June, read it and tried the exercises a few times...didn't work...I gave up. Just recently picked it up again and really followed the directions....drinking lots of water (2 gallons and day), practicing for about 2 hours a day, taking zinc, the whole nine yards. I've been doing this for 5 days....and MAN!!! WOW!!....it's like everything Jaime is saying in this book is clicking! the breathing, the sensations, the sound! everything.

I sound a lot fuller and I think I'm deleloping natural vibrato some how!! (very excited). When I started singing last year, I was crap, but I started to sing more often at my friends house with his karaoke machine. (without the help of RYV) and I actually learned how to sing on key and went on from there.

But now, really reading RYV along with the new copy of the revised RYV ( Thanks Jaime for that free copy). I've manage to GET almost 4 octaves up to C6 (And trust me, I AM NOT A NATURAL SINGER by way far) Notice I said GET not SING up to C6 (this will be addressed in my question in the next paragraph). I've done and have been pretty successful with all the exercises up to the falseto slide (I can't eliminate that flip in the voice all the time yet, but i'm getting there). It's only be 5 day. I expected to master this slide in a few hours but, not true at all.

Anyway here's my question. I skip the transcending tone (very hard execise BTW, and I know I shouldn't have and will be getting to it), and tried the siren (much easier).

Is this the correct sensation, As I start from my lowest note to my highest note in full voice, my head, face, ears, starts buzzing like how RYV states, it feels like I'm using less air as the notes get higher. It gets to a point where the air used feels so little that It starts to feel like I was sucking the air into my troat.

At this point it's very high pitched but it sounds full and loud, but yet it feels soooo easy, almost easier than producing the lower notes. As I'm holding this note I start to think, oh my gosh!! This is amazing!! why don't I sing something while I'm holding this note. This is where it goes wrong....I start to sing something, and almost instantly I can feel my vocal cords or somthing in my throat just crack and bang into each other. I'm like....woh...My throat feels fine and I still can speak normally. What happened? and why can I hold this high note for that long but yet I can't sing in it? It's making me think that although I can produce these high notes, I can't sing in them. What the hell? Kind of frustrating. Am I doing this exercise correctly? I have not attempted to sing at C6 again.

As a matter of fact, it seems that I can not apply the siren to my singing. I can actually feel my vocal cords zip as the notes get higher and is very easy to produce, but when I'm actually singing a song I hit the high notes different, more difficult, not like when I'm performing the siren. Please help.

Sorry for the long post, I just thought that Jaime really deserves MEGA MEGA Props for creating this awesome book and of course I wanted to address my question. Thanks

Re: Is this right?

congrats man!

the siren is a very cool exercise. hahaha i am
making the transcending tone but i dont get it
but i will.

i dont know the answer sorry. but congrats for your
progress

Re: Is this right?

Big applause for Dan You are doing great but I must scold you for skipping the Transcending Tone Exercise. Two things you must realize. #1- You've been taking the practice seriously for only 5 days, and some people will amazingly reach super high notes in only a matter of a few days, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to immediately apply it to a song. If you really want to master all the way up to that C6, then you MUST do all three exercises in a row. I know thet T.T. exercise is hard. Don't worry if you can't do it very well or go as high as the other exercises. Also, don't worry if you haven't mastered the breaks in your voice on the other exercises. The key is to SLOW DOWN at the point where the breaks begin to happen

#2 Vocal Stamina! Doing these exercises is easier than singing because you are only using one contolled vowel. When you sing and the words change by the application of different consonants and vowel, your whole vocal makeup will change with each word, i.e. the posistion of your mouth changes, you'll adjust your larynx, the tongue moves, etc... So, the key to mastering those high notes is to continue to work with the exercises, then add a CD of 5 different songs for you to sing every day. Start with lower songs and gradually build up to the higher pitches.

Just the fact that you've already nailed those notes shows me you can sing that high. You are also absolutely right about the ability to sing high and full with little breath. It will feel like you are inhaling...that's the Inhalation Sensation I talk about in the book. So, congratsulations, and good luck! Keep working hars! If 5 days worked this well, let's see what you can accomplish in 50 days

PS- I would appreciate it if you would give Raise Your Voice a review on Amazon.

Re: Is this right?

For you to create this awesome book AND give me a free copy of the revised RYV....It would be my pleasure to give RYV a review.....done and done.
