THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

soft palate

Hello!I have a question about lifting soft palate.I dont have a problem with keeping soft palate raised but im wondering if im doing it incorectly. When i lift my soft palate and sing its like fixed and it doesnt move up or down it just kind of thins out as i go higher.Feels like im blocking my voice to go into my nose but i also discovered yesterday that i can lift my soft palate just slightly and when i pinch my nose sound color doesnt change but its a little hard to keep it that why becaus my palate just wants to go to that "fixed" position. Please someone tell me if im doing this corectly and if not how to fix this problem. Thanks!

Re: soft palate

What do you mean by fixed position?

Re: soft palate

I mean its always up.It feels like when you pinch your nose and then try to speak without sounding nasal at all.It doesnt move up or down its just up there all the time and thins out on the sides as i go higher.I just want to know does it has to be up like that or slightly lower. Also to ask one more thing. When i do sirens i do them slowly and strong but when i reach my top notes(e-f above middle c)i have to do them pretty loudly and use waay too much air then i shold but thats the only way i can reach them slowly and my larynx just jumps up high.I think i support correctly on more comfortable notes in my range(when i support it feels like when you close your nose and mouth and then try to breathe in, i heard that somewhere)So im wondering will this straining dissapear as i continue to train or am i doing something wrong.
P.S. I dont feel any pain or soreness after the workout.

Re: soft palate

I was going to ask the same question down here....but i saw ur post...looks like we both are suffering from the same problem.... According to me.....it seems fixed too....but when i forget about the nasal pharynx and area of my larynx....keeping it relaxed...and focuse on the resonance at your head....making yr teeth and nose buzz....then it feels quite a pleasant nudge...i will just advice....forget that the placement is in your nasal cavity....just focus up by not focusing in the nasal pharynx.....but keeping the larynx area relaxed....focus on the resonance....i am looking for a better answer if placing the sound in that fixed area is right or wrong....but hope this helps you...happy singing :)
