Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

V24 Phase 1 Questions

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently working on the V24 and ran into some questions.

1. Extreme Breathing exercise:
- When exhaling, do I need to engage the mid section like we do in the hiss exhale?

2. Lip Trills:
- Do I need to lose all tension in the jaw and maintain an open throat during these exercises as well?

3. Hums:
- I lose quite a bit of the buzz when I move into the falsetto equivalent of hums.
Must I maintain the buzz even in high head registers?

4. Falsetto Slide:
- When I hit my currently feasible highest note (around G-A6), although the tone is clear with no breaks, I do feel my jaw and throat area tensing a bit. At the same time, there is no particular discomfort; I can see the veins in my neck, but they're not necessarily bulging out. In this case, should I still consider this my comfortable high note and keep working on it, or should I drop it a notch?

Any feedback would be most appreciated.
Thanks everyone!

- Sebastian

Re: V24 Phase 1 Questions

Hey Sebastian, here's your answers:)
2-Don't even think about that. Just relax as much as you can and it'll fall into place:)
3-You must always maintain the buzz. But please note that if you do go into falsetto and not maintain full voice (which is fine for warmups) the buzz won't be as strong.
4-I would turn your head side to side like saying NO to break that neck tension loose. If it doesn't hurt your voice, yes you can go higher
