THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Inspired by 80's metal vocals...

Glad to see you back in the group:) Song kinda reminds me of the singer who sang "Sex and Candy".

Re: Inspired by 80's metal vocals...

That wasn't even the right song, haha.

Here's the one I meant to link to which was the result of doing the Raise Your Voice exercises(the Yah ones are my favorite). I used to think that the wavering notes were from being vocally weak, but that's actually vibrato which kicked in without trying to do it.

The vocal style changes from one song to another. A large part of the tone is just how it is EQ'd. For snarly tracks, I like to push up the mids, drop the bass down to nothing, and leave the treble in the middle with a subtle plate reverb tail. It makes the tone cut through the guitars, slightly distorts the microphone, and sounds kind of like a voice on a telephone in a small room. For ballads, I push the bass up a little bit, leave the mids and highs alone, and use a slight hall reverb. The nicest thing about reverb VS delay is that reverb is not time-dependent, so you can use it on fast staccato vocal tracks without worrying about the slapback being out of time with the tempo of the song- which is handy if you're in a prog or punk band with abrupt changes of tempo. Of course, the drawback to this is that the vocals sound a little thinner unless you add some chorus to thicken them up.

Not trying to sound pretentious, by the way- this is literally what I'm doing to get different vocal sounds.

Great topic. i have been singing for 10 year now and David Coverdale is my GOD. Just feel his tone and vibrato, truly one of the best vocals in all of rock music.I have improved my vocal after discovering Ken Tampliin. This dude is awesome. He has his own channel on youtube. Showing techniques of different singers he was able to gain almost 400 000 subscribers. Really like his tutorial. Also I play the guitar, have 1986 Gibson SG and Fender Jazzmaster. Also work as content writer at https://wedohomework.net/.
