THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Ridiculous exhaling,hissing/ Singing ratio

Hi Jamie!

I just finished your book 'The ultimate breathing workout' and did the recommended exercises and I have some ridiculous results. Here's what I mean:

Abdominal Release #1/hissing- 104s no problem! (I'm doing this exercise for quite a moment now)
Abdominal Release #2- 2x
Breath Capacity #1/Breath holding- 183s
Breath Capacity #2/Empty lungs breath holding- 63s
Breath Release #1/12345678910 exercise- 8x (speaking hight)
Breath Release #2 /abcd exercise- 4x until 'F' the fifth time (speaking hight)
Sustain #1- 24s singing hight (around middle C) and I felt vocal fatigue already
Sustain #2- 49s (speaking hight)
Sustain #3- the E below Tenor C for 16s and I felt vocal fatigue already.

See? Everything's great until I actually start singing. My scores immediately drop significantly as soon as I sing any higher than my low speaking voice... It's frustraiting. Being able to hold my breath for 3 minutes and still not having it translated in any way into a vocal performance... Any insights on that?

Thanks!

Re: Ridiculous exhaling,hissing/ Singing ratio

Marcin, haha, you are JUST beginning. Only a month at this is not going to change your sustain times dramatically while singing. Wait to take notice after THREE months of this workout. As well, you should also be doing the Isolation exercises, but do them slowly so each pitch takes longer. For example, instead of a 4 second transcending tone, try to extend it to like 12 seconds and beyond. It takes time to develop this technique;)

PS- Your rates are great, but trust me, each breathing exercise could be much longer. I've held my breath for like 5-6 minutes. You can too in time.
