THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

air management

Hey jaime... You talked about that breathing should be relaxed.... And on the other side you said that it does not take a lot of air.... And according to the first chapter in the book i read that air is the fuel of your voice.....i just want to know that..... When i support and push down.... Then shouldnt i release any amount air???.... And if no... Then should i have to focus the air towards the soft palate for the release of tone..... Because as i have noticed with my own voice..... When i exhale(or just say sing.... But just like a sigh which feels relaxed)......i feel almost tension free including my inhalation sensation....but this has only demerit... And that is..i cannot sustain long notes(maybe it will improve with practice time)... So.... Please.... Direct me in the right direction....i know singing is a simple terminology. And relaxed...... But i am confused.. And i want to end this confusion once and for all

Re: air management

Gaurav,

I've only been singing a few months, and seriously for around 2 months or so, so take what I say with a grain of salt...

But I'm pretty sure It's the actual resonance (or sound), you focus toward the soft palette... not air. In fact, from what I understand, the purpose of support is to control, or limit the amount of air you use.

When you are singing, mentally, you are constantly inhaling. You take a micro-breath, then as you sing, you imagine your inhaling. The goal is to reduce the amont of air expelled.

I hope that helps.

Adam

Re: air management

Don't think of it as "air" hitting the palate; it is vocal energy, or the frequency that was created by the air vibrating the cords. If you think if it like air, you may use too much air. Singing and breath management are a rhythmic flow. And it really doesn't take a whole lot of air to make it all happen. So, when you focus down/push down, you trick that diaphragm into wanting to "push down" too. Which means that it won't relax as quickly, thus less air is released:)

Re: air management

Thank you sir...... But one last thing..... What is the difference between bearing down and pushing down??..... In raise your voice.... You mentioned that.... Whenever someone pushes your stomach while singing.... Then the stomach should go in very easily...... Whenever i support then.... I visualise that....in My whole abdominal area..... The area of the solar plexes contract a bit.... And the area below(or just around) my navel..... Gets tight and pops out.... Is it ok???..... Because as i think..... While supporting..... There must be some kind of tension which can prevent the wattage of a lot of breath...... Sorry for this whole lecture mr vendera..... But i am sure that you can guide me in the right direction..... :)...... Singing is my dream.... Specially of rock and metal genres...... Please help me
