Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Make sure your sinuses are open, and close one of them with a finger. Breathe in as hard as you can through the other nostril.
This will draw your breath in correctly. Pay attention to the feeling of the muscles in your lower back and the expansion of your bottom ribs. The lower ribs move.
When you feel that feeling, press down as if you are going to the bathroom.
Then do a slow air leak by placing your tongue against your teeth and making a tsss(hissing) kind of sound. Make it the lightest sound you can make it.

Feel that feeling in your ribs and your back? That is the feeling you are looking for.

With correct Breath Support your voice rides on top of a column of air which acts like a spring inside your body. You maintain the expanded state of your ribs and back as much as possible so that you are holding back the breath inside your torso and not by the closure of the glottis or vocal cords. Too much air pressure against your vocal cords can actually cause them to bow out, so you want to have the minimal amount of air pressure on your vocal cords.

By pressing straight down, you hold the diaphragm in a lowered state, which keeps it from automatically rising and pushing the air our of your lungs.
The diaphragm and lungs act like a pump, constantly equalizing the pressure inside your body with the air pressure outside of your body, so the idea is to slow down the speed, and control the action of the diaphragm's "pumping" up and down.

Thanks a lot Tim, thats great info, especially the on where you have to take a hard inhale through one nostril :)

But....i still get everything in the throat as soon i push down....

Is there perhaps another way to "push"......?
Or perhaps an exercise that helps me push down while keeping the throat relexed with no constriction.....

its like evertime i do it and try to say something it just sounds breathy, like im pushing something really heavy.

What am i missing ?

I have this problem too, I ordered a PTD-1 hoping it would help but it hasn't gotten here yet.
