THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Technique Question

Lazy/dragging chord closure (fry), strained belting, medium to medium-high grit, squeaking, piercing bloom, vowel mods and covers.

IMO the above is too showy, strained, and lax in technique. Her House of the Rising Sun is a lot better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts9oMPpvJew

Her grit is still way over the top though. It sounds like an angry child, it needs to be deeper or slower.

I agree with Christopher on what she is doing.

AS far as being over the top... I see what she was going for and I see why Chris felt it was over the top. If you close your eyes it all "feels" right, but then at the beginning of the second verse it's almost like she liked the reaction of the grit and just started using it inappropriately without any lyrical/emotional justification. If the grit was a natural aspect of her tone it would be one thing, but a "created" or "I purposely put grit here because I (the singer) wanted to, not because the emotion/song led me to" grit is fake and will NEVER sound right no matter how good or bad the grit technique.

Her grit sounds like an angry child because she IS a child, and because of her natural, headier toned resonances, she needs to develop her voice past "baby tones" to get it (and her rasp) any fuller. I wasn't particularly impressed with HotRS either. Again she rasped just for the sake of rasping. BUT - that's COMPLETELY a style issue.
