THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Changing Your Speaking Voice?

Is it possible to change the sound of your speaking voice? I have a really low voice and I get made fun of for it, and I was wondering if there was a way to make it a little bit higher.

Yes you can.

I would suggest you get Dr. Morton Cooper's book,"Change Your Voice, Change Your Life."It is out of print, but you can get it used for around $10-$12 via Amazon or Alibris.com.

Also, in the video section on Jaime's website, look for the video Interviews that he did with Dr. Cooper. There is a lot to be said for having a deep speaking voice.

Also, check your local Library! Many of them have Dr. Cooper's books in their system. All of his books are good, and they pretty much teach the same thing.

Practice singing (with good technique) for over 1 hour.

Your voice will be set higher. I call this "little boy's voice"

Hahah, well as a low bass baritone who sings very comfortably up to F4 in chest (for 6 or so hours) the change doesn't last long. AND it also makes your voice deeper depending on where you're speaking from--or worse--your speaking voice becomes distorted from being stretched out (though singing is still great) and needs to be warmed down (I prefer the term 'warmed down' because 'cooled down' sounds painful for my throat haha).

You can just simply lighten your speaking voice in the silly way Jaimie does in the RYV audio example and get much better/reliable results. If you speak from the same low place you're still going to get a low sound.

Singing/warming up a lot just improves the quality and sharpens the timbre.

A good example of this is singing the beginning of Welcome to the Black Parade by MCR. Even after being warmed-up and easily hitting higher notes in chest voice I have to lighten the timbre to get the vulnerable little boy voice (much like the Jaimie example--though of course if you just lighten your voice and can't hit the notes properly it's going to sound stupid).

It helps to imagine you're projecting a cone from higher up in your throat at about nasal level (BUT NOT OUT YOUR NOSE) up to your head.

Re: Changing Your Speaking Voice?

Yes, it is possible to change your speaking voice. Unless you are already using your natural pitch this shouldn't be necessary. Instead, learn to LOVE your voice! It's what makes it unique. Your natural pitch is the one on which you would answer a question using "Mmmm". Try to talk around this pitch.

If I may also recommend my book for the speaking voice (written for teachers but useful to anyone), brought to you by Vendera Publishing:

Good luck!
