THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: James Hetfield's technique

Extreme Scream 2 (screaminglessons.com) explains it.

Re: James Hetfield's technique

Extreme Scream 2 is awesome and will teach you to get the grit.

The problem with Hetfield is old Metallica in the 70's is very falsettoish and easy to do. His later stuff with the power requires grit plus belting to actually get the proper tone, otherwise your voice will be too high or low or falsettoish.

So of course learn the grit in Extreme Scream 2 and it's fun, but then you need belting. Don't blow-out your voice. My experience with belting is it's easier to do with a a slight smile/smawn like if you're doing a piercing tone.

As for Hetfield's current voice health don't know/doesn't really matter--just don't screw up yours.

Didn't he blow his voice out covering 'So What?'

Yeah, it was when he sang that part about an old man.

If I were going to cover Anti-Nowhere League, there are much better songs, like Queen and Country or Out on the Wasteland from the "Out on the Wasteland" E.P. Metallica just picked "So What" because it got banned. (I loved the Anti-Nowhere League back then, and I still have this stuff on vinyl.)

Re: James Hetfield's technique

No it's a natural result primarily because of his natively developed soft palate which is a very big support indicator of Russell Alen's vocal performance but he blew it after Black album as ppl on their posts already mentioned. Breathing was an important part!

I was wondering if there is anyone who knows what kind of techniques James Hetfield from metallica employs in his singing, for example his powerful growl...

In CVT terms (Complete Vocal Technique) he mainly uses Overdrive with a dark sound color and distortion.
