THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Breath support-confused?

breathe into the belly, keep the chest expanded and hold a SSSSS for 30 seconds. it's in jaime's book.

oiselle's suggestion is great, althoguh when you sing you wont' want to be "blowing out all the air" like a birthday cake so just remember it's just to get the SENSATION in the belly.

this will get the "downwards push" going

Re: Breath support-confused?

When Jaime speaks of the "going to the bathroom" push sensation, it's not the vein popping, red faced, constipated push, it's the isolated in the lower portion of the body push - but then only the stomach/lower ab muscles, leave the rectal muscles tight and out of the push... or singing will be a messy business LMAO.

Okay, gonna get blunt here for a sec.. cause.. that's what needs to happen to explain it right.... THAT SAID... when you push out a fart, or squeeze too much for a #2 you hold/lock the lungs, that is the part you DON'T want to do because it's actually your chords that are holding back that air, instead use that TYPE of push minus the lung lock to slowly and STEADILY release the air with a relaxed chest. You are now actually controlling the airflow WITH your abdominal exhalation muscles instead of trying to hold back a flood with toilet paper

Pretend you have "dead lungs" and all of the muscles associated with "top breathing" are dead too, just use your abs. Once you've got that sensation down then work in the muscles that expand your ribs apart from the outsides. like you're puffng out for dominance or a fight on the inhale - WIDE though, not chest up/out.

Now you're a giant sack of air, like a bagpipe your sustain and power will change based on how much air volume you allow with your abdomen. Again, can't stress enough, all the support, the air pressure is done by "bearing down" with the abdomen or not.

NOW that's the breathing portion, the other 3/4 of the support is the balancing of vocal fold tension (with minimal stress), resonance placement and the shape of the mouth and palate.
