THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Vocal Body Building?

I started working with RYV about 3 weeks ago and may I first say thank you, Jaime, for getting me started with understanding the anatomy of vocalizing. My natural speaking/singing voice is a lowish baritone - I sang Bass I in all my choral experience and had some lessons about 12 years ago learning bass-baritone pieces (my favorite was "Madamina, Il Catalogo E Questo"). My wife has recently been encouraging me to build my voice back up and try out for The Voice or a similar talent show, so here we are.

With that rambling intro out of the way, here's the main question: How can I maintain or increase thickness and body in my tone/timbre as I go up in pitch through the zipper/thyroid tilt range? For a good example of what I'm trying to achieve, listen to a few Type O Negative songs (e.g. "I Don't Wanna Be Me", "An Ode to Locksmiths", "Anesthesia", "Cinnamon Girl" and "Summer Breeze" for contrast (tho' the high screams are from guitarist Kenny Hickey, not Steele)). Peter Steele had an amazing instrument and I know I don't have the same model he did, but I'd love to be able to carry the illusion of open-throated chest resonance, what I think of as a "meaty" tone, as high as I can.

My ideal musical product would sound like borrowed parts from Type O, Epica, Within Temptation, Sirenia, Falconer, Nightwish, Karelia, Kamelot, Lacuna Coil and other similar influences.

Re: Vocal Body Building?

Michael, that's what the Isolatiob exercises do; they build vocal muscle. I remember Brett Manning saying to me how he couldn't believe how thick/wide my voice sounded in the upper register like I was pulling chest, yet he knew I wasn't. That is the result of muscle;) It takes time. Focus on the technique, keep those ribs spread, and if you own RYV2 or are an Academy member, don't forget the "Sean Connery" positioning of the palate;)

Re: Vocal Body Building?

vowel modifications and glottal compression (inhalation sensation/holding breath)so that you can pull more chest higher up in the range. stay big on the sirens.
