THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Question regarding non vocal exercises

Hey team!

Just a query regarding the tongue-pushups, bullfrogs, head curls and platysma pullups.....

I find when I do any of these exercises early in the day that my voice really suffers for it! Especially tongue pushups which leaves me with what I can only describe as a weak and tired voice, and platysma pullups which give me sensations of jaw tension even if my chewing muscles are very loose.

Is this just a matter of me being really out of shape? Or am I onto something and I just need to do these exercises later in the day i.e after rehearsals so the quality and range of my voice is not so important?

Cheers in advance, have a wonderful day and break some barriers :)

Re: Question regarding non vocal exercises

Hey Jon,

I don't do these particular variations, but something similar. Long-story short, I think you are overdoing it or doing them wrong.

They will wear out your jaw and neck some but after a few minutes you should actually be more ready and warmed-up to sing, not less.

Hope that helps, GL with your singing.

Re: Question regarding non vocal exercises

Yes, it is a matter of being out of shape. They can and will make you feel tense, tired, etc. But again, it shouldn't last for hours. I even feel the platysmal pull ups a few hours later if I haven;t done them for awhile and do even as little as three sets of ten

Re: Question regarding non vocal exercises

Interesting....

I am still feeling the platysma a WEEK after when I did them... and I am typically a fairly fit guy!

I can maintain the bullfrog position for 20 minutes no sweat whatsoever, it is really the platysma pullups and the tongue pushups that get me. Suprised about the tongue pushup problem as my tongue position is a real strength in my technique!

Re: Question regarding non vocal exercises

Yes the Platysmas are brutal and they make my head feel like it weighs a hundred pounds and the muscles under my chin extremely stiff. Tongue push ups get you too. For those you also need balance by learning to work your finger down to the root of the tongue as mentioned in VSR.
