THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Elvis Presley , Jim Morrison, Glenn Danzig, Ian Astbury similarities

Hi!
So you are saying that Ian is singing with too much air and thus damaging his voice or this only affects the number of phrases he can sing on the single breath?
I've heard Danzig on some live recordings on YT and I can say, that he kinda sucked, not that I don't like him, but as you said before you could hear that something was wrong.
I really like the tone of those guys and I would love to get that technique.
BTW Skullsplitter do you have any recordings of Danzig/Astbury covers? Would love to hear it!

I'm not saying Ian Astbury is doing it wrong. I don't know - I saw him live about 25+ years ago and he was fine. What I am saying is that was who I was trying to sound like at the time. I'd already conquered King Diamond at the time, so I went for the other extreme - all chest. LOL But I was doing it by pushing a ton of air, and at the time (we're talking 1989-1990) I didn't know about lowering your larynx, or holding back the breath - I equated volume/power and breath support with taking in and pushing with as much air as possible. I got away with it for a long time, but eventually it caught up with me, and I began blowing my voice out repeatedly. And THAT is what lead me to breath training and the development of the breath training device that I sell.

I don;t have me singing any covers, but somewhere around here I have a cassette of me singing with a punk rock band - live in their band room. I'll have to see if I can find it, and if so, I'll put up a sample. The drummer is Sam McCandless, the drummer in the band COLD. I was singing on of the songs that his band did, trying to get their singer to sing instead of just "talk" through the lines like he normally did.

I have looked everywhere for that tape but can't find it. I've been going through stuff and packing stuff away because I'm getting ready to head to Ohio for a few months on the 27th. of June, if I come across while I'm digging through boxes, I'll pop it online.
