THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Question about my two support "modes"

Hi,

In my everyday practise I finally understood how to feel the sound on the pallate and that made me able to expand my range and volume. That is great for rock songs, but I found it was quite hard to sing my other favorite songwriter, more contained style, with a diction closer to that of the spoken voice, if that makes sense.

After some experimenting I discovered that I can sing those songs much more easier by doing something like compressing the sound below my throat, not taking it to the pallate. Also I feel more tension in the abs, and even I feel the lats, which I don't feel working when singing the other way. I don't feel strain with this approach as long as I don't try to sound the same way as in the other one, because this one has somehow a different nature.

To make it more clear, some sensations in this way of singing can be described as (but the actual physical mechanism may no match them) actively forcing the larynx to drop, high subglottal pressure, sound being generated in the stomach, etc.

So, are they valid techniques to be applied to different styles? Or have I splitted the ONE technique into two pieces so I'm always doing it bad?

Some clues on it would be VERY appreciated as I'm quite confused about it.

Re: Question about my two support "modes"

Sounds like you split the correct approach into half, which isn't correct. You should feel it in the palate AND those lower abs, and it works for ALL styles;)

Re: Question about my two support "modes"

Thank you, Jaime! I'll try to make both work at the same time.
