THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hi Christopher.
Thank you for your reply. I will record some acapella examples tomorrow and post them on the board;) My 'grit' happens only when Im singing higher, in the lower register I can only do poor death metal grit.. The headache stuff is happening when Im singing rob zombie etc or other mega-grit monsters.

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hey Mike,

Are you abusing your bridge to do grit?

If you can do death metal grit, just do it with a "hay" and then close it together and go up a little with a connected "eee" and you should go into low grit.

What's your range?

Can you do and apply transcending tone?

I think transcending tone is important to learn first so you don't damage yourself when doing high scream/grit.

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hi!
Ive just recorded some grits, transcending tone, chewbaca sounds, siren (at the end of siren is my range). Ive got also Rebel Yell acapalla.
Here it is:

Grits

Gargling

Siren

Transcending tone

Acapella grit in song

I dont know if i did low grit, to me it sounds like death metal one, at he end of this I did my (higher) grit
Ive got still problems with transcending tone, youll hear it;p
Also my range is pretty small.

I will appreciate any suggestions where to go with my voice.
Thanks

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hey again Mike,

Alright I checked over your files but before I give you some advice I need a little more info.

I really wanted to help you so I printed out the lyrics and did sort of a mangled cover (my first attempt to sing this song on my laptop mic). I was mostly just trying to experiment with different types of grit than sing.

Soo....

Check it out and let me if there is kind of grit that's like the one you want (what time, ie 00:00-00:00) and I'll try to help you get it.

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hi
I think the grit in the first chorus is what i want, I can hear you are not straining or something. In my recording you can hear massive strain;p
Cheers

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hey again,

I was planning on making an audio tutorial but I got caught up with stuff so I'll try to explain it.

I think it's best to learn this in slight breathy falsetto to first eliminate the strain.

So just do the, "More, More, More!". Don't do "More" anymore than three or four times per set because you might strain or wear yourself out.

Alright grit kind of needs to be leaned into. The way I think of it is imagine your soft pallet at the top of your mouth is like a spinning grind stone and you lean the breath into it and back off.

The variation would go something like, fast & front = rasp or pallet trill || slow & back = sloppy/wet hiss-growl. The more you "lean" into the placement the more distortion you achieve.

So obviously you lean in generally toward the end of the phrase or lyric and also the end of the word.

Once you get the right sound you can try expanding the lyric to have more abrupt consonants like "'G'et" or anything with a 'K'. These will require more coordinated muscles.

Once you have that you can tighten up the muscles to produce less breathiness and either go for a chesty tone or a full/mixed voice.

Oh yeah, and make sure you have plenty of water to hydrate the back of your throat so it's not dry when doing this.

Anyways let me know if that helps at all.

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hi!
Don't get it;/ I'm still in death metal grit mode, too much air, and as I go higher im slipping into falsetto.

I'm still curious about the kind of grit I can produce. Maybe I am using my false chords like in fry screams. Don't know. I'm only tightening my throat a little and then it sounds like this. The more I tighten the nastier it sounds..

http://www26.zippyshare.com/v/10715348/file.html

Sometimes it produces overtones like in throat singing. I think..
Cheers,
Mike

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hi,

You don't tighten your throat or you choke or 'grunt' as Jaime calls it.

What you do is aim and adjust the air into the pallet. Or as I put it, 'lean' the air.

The part where you 'tighten' the throat is just between breathy falsetto and mixed/full voice.

Like I suggested before try doing it in a breathy falsetto so you know you're not choking.

Just about anyone can imitate grit with a breathy falsetto. The problem is then bringing it up a little with the soft pallet. But start there first as it seems your problem is the reverse.

Re: Grit newbie, losing headvoice, headache

Hi Chris!
Thanks very much for help. I think I get it. I was tighting too much and singing too high thus loosing my voice. Please check out my cover of Venom posted on the other topic.

Thanks again
Mike
