THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

The Eye Opener...

Hi everybody,

I would be really pleased if you could take 5 minutes of your time to listen to my music and give me feedbacks, as it is the first time I upload it online...

http://www.TheEyeOpenerMusic.com

Please, just let me know if there's something sounding wrong in you ear :D

A big thank you and keep on singing !!

Resonate.

Re: The Eye Opener...

Cool different approach. Kinda reminds me of parts of Mars Volta with the darkness and purity of the voice. Also, you might want to check out some sopranists, although none of the great sopranist names come to my mind right now, urrgg, haha.

Re: The Eye Opener...

Hi Jaime,

Thanks for your answer :)
I had an album of Mars Volta somewhere in my hard disk but I have to say I never really listened to it !

Do you know the band Madder Mortem ? They are from Norway and I actually admire the interpretation of the singer.

Well thanks for everything again, you and your book have been helping me a lot the past years !

Re: The Eye Opener...

I don't listen to French music so I wasn't sure what to expect. It sounded like a very slight and unobtrusive Bjork-like accent.

To mainstream pigeonhole it I'd say (at least Anger) is like a soft Evanescence. I think Amy's more of mezzo vs soprano with a more brassy mid range.

Nice stuff.

Re: The Eye Opener...

Thanks Christopher!

Well I guess it's better if you don't listen to "real French music"... by that I mean French pop music =)

A lot of (French) people compare us to Evanescence, but I still don't really understand why. I don't feel like we are doing some kind of "gothic rock". Am I wrong ?
Is it because of the voice ?

I'm looking forward uploading our new songs to see if you still consider it a "soft evanescence" haha

Thanks again!

Re: The Eye Opener...

For the most part we live in a commercial society where everything is pigeonholed or stereotypically or brought down to a really basic level and categorized.

If you wrote novels it would be the same. It's mostly what is the most basic way to relate to the music that the most amount of people can understand. IE, where to put it to find fans and people who want to buy--or even being an opening act or finding a genre'd record label/deal.

So it's not really bad. It's in fact a very important part of marketing and being successful.

I don't think Evanescence is necessarily 'gothic rock' but for instance, just because it has a guy that raps on it can be very easily categorized as 'Nu Metal' with Linkin Park, etc.

Also one of things Amy does is add some celtic techniques with the rock which it seems you are doing as well. In fact Amy Lee is probably the most famous mainstream female singer who adds celtic type sounds to rock. So, if you have a female singer who is doing Euro-like celtic rock many people will automatically think Evanescence--just on that level alone. Evanesence was probably compared to Nightwish because of this too (even though it's not Rock-Opera).

Another example: if you have really elaborate costumes/make-up you are automatically classed with KISS (ie, GWAR).

So anyways, you always want to sound somewhat like something otherwise you have create an entire audience to enjoy your music/sound because literally nothing is like it. Everyone gets some kind push up on someone else's style or genre.
