THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Slipping into falsetto? Tone quality. What am I doing wrong? (samples)

Hello my friends, my name is Michael (polish - Michał;)) and I am a newbie here. I'm trying to improve my singing voice and I would like to ask few questions about the tone of my voice and slipping into falsetto.

Did I just slipped into falsetto in this record? Will I hurt my throat screaming like that?

Here are some examples from Desert Plains by Judas Priest. I need somebody to hear me and tell what 'sucks';), what should I improve. Was the "grit" on 'im coming BACK' right? Oh and again is the last note falsetto?

I will be very grateful for your objective comments and suggestions.

Greeting from Poland,
Mike

Hey Mike, I'm on the run and no time to listen but i did want to say hang in there. It takes time to build muscles in order to narrow the glottis on the highs so the voice stays full and doesn't flip to falsetto. Keep doing all three Isolation exercises in order and keep singing those high songs and over time you'll eventually be able to maintain a full voice tone;)

Hi Jaime
Thank you very much for responding and your time. It's great to be here! I'm still working on grit and tone production. I will practice as hard as i can.
Cheers!
Mike

Hey Mike, first off, nice job! For a beginner you are attempting some high notes don't be too hard on yourself singing takes time and proper practice.

As to your question of whether or not it will hurt your throat to scream like you are, let me ask, does it hurt you? you should not be feeling any pain while adding grit.

what seems to be happening in both clips, on the high notes you are losing vocal chord compression and slipping into a lighter coordination which is not really what you are going for stylistically. Adding in more of a cry into the note to hold the chord compression may help you to keep the chords together stronger or your chords just may need some more time developing the strength to hold back such a high velocity of air.

hope that helps a little, just my two cents

Hi highriser!
Thank you so much for your tips! As you said before I will try to add more cry;) Maybe with time I will develop more strenght. Hope my neighbours won't kill me in the meantime..
