THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Ok i am stepping out of my comfort zone and asking for honest critiques

Tough singer. I had to do "When You Love a Woman" and a few other Adams tunes for a wedding years ago. I've been begging them for the video so I could post it.

Now, listening to the tune, I hear some wavering in your voice like on words like, "she's" proving you need more support. Song isn't out of your range, but your mind is telling you it is, especially on the chorus. I'd tighten up those little licks he does on words like "you" and add more sass, maybe even a little breath to get that Adams feel to have that husky tone without trying to sound like him;)

I'm proud of you for posting, that's what this is all about;)

Re: Ok i am stepping out of my comfort zone and asking for honest critiques

Thanks for the reply Jaime.

Yeah i realize stylistically i am not near him yet, I deliberately backed off breath as i tend to over push breath in that register and end up pulling chest.
I will work more on support as you suggested. "She" happens to fall on an e4 in that key which is smack bang in the middle of my break so it often gives me trouble.
One issue i have sometimes is losing placement in the soft palate when i increase breath pressure or energy for a chorus. I find it harder at louder volumes to keep it away from my throat.
I was not that impressed with this recording but to be fair i generally sing more laid back or groovy stuff. But i would like to have as many vocal tools in my kit to sing as many different styles as i can effectively.

More critiques/suggestions welcome...happy to learn from you awesome people!

Re: Ok i am stepping out of my comfort zone and asking for honest critiques

Been working on support and using more breath. Seeing improvement :) Just recorded the song again using my phone and it was tons better! Also recorded "rosanna" by toto, I do a minor third down from the original but it still has sits around F#4-A4 in some parts. Getting better though.

I realized i was not using much support at all, I guess i was underestimating its need. Learnt my lesson!
Thanks for the input Jaime!
