THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Be VERY careful of following Youtube videos

Hello all, you know I stay humble and always support my fellow singers and coaches, but I feel I need to say a few words. Recently, a student came to me wanting to sing with grit for singing along to AC/DC and Judas Priest. He was tired of waiting for Extreme Scream 3-which is finished by the way, but my partner is slower than the 7-year itch and simply wastes more time thinking about the project than finishing it up, ha-ha. Days before the lesson, the student sent me links to multiple videos of individuals demonstrating grit on YouTube. Of the videos that I viewed, some attempted to explain grit while others just screamed for the sake of gaining more students. Many of these videos worried me, because when I see a singer demonstrating grit and his/her neck caves in and looks like cords rippling up the sides, then I know they are doing grit incorrectly. When a singer says he tastes blood when he screams, that's a sign they are doing it wrong.

There are not many ways to add grit, there is only the correct way, which I teach in RYV and the Extreme Scream series. Regardless, this is not a sales pitch for my products, and I'm sure there ARE great videos on YouTube that explain it. But, I simply want to make sure that you choose wisely when following these videos.

I do endorse Melissa Cross, and of course, James Lugo who has amazing grit that is produced correctly. And I hear that Susanne Carr understands grit as well. So, you wouldn't go wrong learning from them. So, be careful, make sure to support, feel that rumbling in the roof of your mouth, and watch yourself in the mirror when practicing grit. Last thing I want is you to lose your voice or develop nodules;)

Re: Be VERY careful of following Youtube videos

I know what you mean. I've seen people saying stuff like "just push through the pain" (!!!)

Re: Be VERY careful of following Youtube videos

Phil, I saw one guy just making grit noises on his iPhone from low to high, and his neck was bulging 80% of the time. I think he was trying to get students, but it was obvious he had no clue what he was doing. And I've also heard the "push through the pain" saying. Guess that nodule was soften the hurt, ha-ha;)
