THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

question for jaime

hey jaime :) love ur book man its so complete...my question is about jim gillette's vocal power...i read in ur book as well as in this forum that u'd written to practice his exercises softly...been doin that and its working really well...my question is should i practice ALL the exercises softly?wat im tryng to ask is...are the exercises mainly about developing the muscle memory?i mean jim mentions about really pushing from the diaphragm for some of the exercises and adding more power etc

Re: question for jaime

Power is achieve with resonance not by pushing hard. If you need to push hard, then you lack the space required for the voice to reach its natural resonators, the sinus cavities. Practise releasing your voice as you would in a sigh. You shouldn't need more power than that until you start running out of breath and if the rest of the instrument is aligned.

Re: question for jaime

thanx for replying oiselle...as of now im singing raising the soft palate keeping the tongue down and focusing the voice on the hard palate(yes i knw jaime says soft palate)wat are some other ways to increase resonance...im also doing the ultimate breathing workout along with his isolation exercises

Re: question for jaime

Enunciate and sing to the vowels. If the vowels don't sound natural, your colouring the sound by adding tension in your palate, tongue, raised larynx, etc.

Re: question for jaime

It can take a long time to figure out how to deal with resonators.
I think it's all about sensations and experimenting.
All the stuff with rising soft palate, yawning... is to give an idea to where we should direct the air flow. It's all about subtility, you don't have to overdo it and always think about it when you sing, it must be a natural feeling, otherwise you'll tend to tense.
I found that 2 RYV exercices can give some tricks to which sensation you have to feel : the gargling tone and the resonance humming.
Hope it will help.

Re: question for jaime

Just do them soft for a few weeks then get louder as you can handle it:)
