How to get a Personal eMail certificate

Go to http://www.thawte.com and join for free. [ You will need to make a User Name and give ID; Drivers Licence best.

Then

1. Log into your Personal certificate account at the following url, http://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/contents.exe
2. Select "Certificate " from the left hand side menu.
3. Click "Request A Certificate".
4. Under "Get X.509 Certificate". and click on 'request'
5. A pop up window will appear with the type of certificate requested selected - click on request
6. Click next and do not select anything under the Employment option
7. Choose the email address you are requesting the certificate for and click on next
8. Accept "Default extensions". and click accept
9. Click "Next" to generate private key.
10. Click "Finish".
11. Click next
12. Wait for an email informing you that your certificate has been issued.

To enable the requirement to enter a password when using a personal email certificate in an email client, the certificate must be requested with the security setting to high.

To request a certificate with security setting to high please view the following:

1. Log into your Personal certificate account at the following url, http://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/contents.exe
2. Select "Certificate " from the left hand side menu.
3. Click "Request A Certificate".
4. Under "Get X.509 Certificate". and click on 'request'
5. A pop up window will appear with the type of certificate requested selected - click on request
6. Click next and do not select anything under the Employment option
7. Choose the email address you are requesting the certificate for and click on next
8. Accept "Default extensions". and click accept
9. Click "Next" to generate private key.
10. There will be a pop up with the title: "Potential Scripting Violation", click "Yes"
11. In next pop up "Creating a new RSA exchange key", click on "Set Security level"
12. Now you will be able to set a security level appropriate to "High"

This will allow you to send a Certificate with your eMail, showing that it has come from you only.
