THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

reinforced falsetto and whistle register

O.K so when the head voice ends how many notes is it typical to have in a reinforced falsetto until the whistle register kicks in? Or should it be head hoice all the way until whistle?

The reason I ask is I got this instructor who's telling me I gotta flip into a new voice if I wanna sing the high F's up to the A's. He's telling me I gotta get out of full voice if I wanna go any higher and get into "a whole new territory of opening up and letting more air pass the folds while keeping the folds together." He called it a "mariah carey whistle voice", I asked him if he was talking about a reinforced falsetto cuz I know i don't need to crack into a whistle register until at most an Aflat, he said " same thing".

The book seems to me to talk about the reinforced falsetto as an exercize though. If head voice and falsetto are the same thing, why might someone call a reinforced falsetto a whistle voice?

Re: reinforced falsetto and whistle register

Head voice just refers to a place...the higher pitches. Whistle is just an extension and NO you don't have to flip to a whole new voice. Reinforced falsetto will not get you there. If you want whistle, once you have gotten used to falsetto slides, swith to an "ooo" sound. THis is how I got whistle. You MUST keep the sound very small and pure. Now if you just want a higher range and haven't gotten there yet, continue the program. Sirens will get you there. Pick up Jim GIllette's Vocal Power and do his scales;)

Re: reinforced falsetto and whistle register

Thanks guys. I'll use all that advice.
I have Gillette's dvd. I do use his exercizes. My only question about that thing is why does he say to sing the vowels exactly like he does? They sound sort of like Axl Rose. It's cool but it's not a sound I want to emulate.I remember he did say something along the lines of these exercizes are not meant for actual singing. Is his pronunciation just style? I know he does sing his words like that. -OR-
Do the vowels actually work the voice toward some result in producing them like that?
