THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Song not made for you.

I was singing a genesis song this is the world we live in. i hit the notes but freind said it did not sound nice up high.

Even that i sing elton jhon and marron 5 sounds great they say.

Any when i sing my song its fine.

Is it just the song is not made for your voice.

Re: Song not made for you.

Possibly. I know for example that my voice wouldn't suit certain styles as well. But if you like it, you can still sing it. Who cares what people think. Singing is fun. You sing what makes YOU happy.

Re: Song not made for you.

He brings up a great point though. Some people's voices just aren't right for certain pieces. You can still sing the piece fine, but despite having great technique it just wont sound good in your voice.

Like O. says, you can still sing it if you really enjoy it. It's also worth noting that sometimes the problem is that the song wont sound good in your voice the way you're trying to sing it... potentially if you change it up a little the song will fit your voice better.

It's good to know what does and what doesn't work in your voice though, if you're interested in performing professionally or if you're singing in competitions.

Re: Song not made for you.

No cover songs ever fit my voice perfectly.

Also you'll notice that when a famous band plays a cover song, they put it to their style. Like that song Mad World. The original is this fast poppy 70's or 80's thing. The cover is a slow piano ballad thing. If the guy who made the slower one sang it like the original, he'd sound awful.

Re: Song not made for you.

If your style doesn't fit the song then sometimes you have to make a song fit your style. For instance, I couldn't picture David Draiman of Disturbed singing anywhere remotely close to the style of Phil Collins. Nor could I see Disturbed playing in the style of Genesis. But David took his singing style and applied it to the song and it fits quite well. Once you know your style, use it. Style originality goes a lot further than style conformity and emulation in my opinion.

Re: Song not made for you.

Great reply! Indeed change the song to fit you... besides, we have the original already so its just better to make it your own!!

Re: Song not made for you.

And one more thing...

I was singing a Britney Spears song and since I haven't been doing this for very long I can't really control this new voice completely... so I dont really have my own style yet... and in singing it, it sounded HORRIBLE but I'm confident that if the song was say, a Steelheart piece, it would have sounded alright on all the higher parts.

Re: Song not made for you.

Thx for the support i started to lose confidance in the the higher register i know i sing mixed in high

Still working till full voice.

Re: Song not made for you.

Also to say i have my own style i sing to my songs. But it seems it does not fit world we live in.

Fits elton jhon tained love soft cell.

eighteen alice cooper voice is a strange thing.

Also if you do not feel your staining can it sound like that? i feel connected just the freind i shows it to sayed did not sound to good on the high notes.

I thought is sounded conneted and on the notes,

Re: Song not made for you.

That's why I said in the book that I love singing Journey but it doesn't fit my voice. Led Zeppelin fits much nicer, although it is higher vocals. You HAVE to realize you cannot sound similar to everyone. Find what works for you.

Re: Song not made for you.

i can't picture anybody singing welcome to the jungle but axl rose

i can't picture axl rose singing star spangled banner

Pavarotti (R.I.P.) was awesome at opera. Brian Johnson is awesome with ACDC. Can't picture Pavarotti singing Back in Black and I cant picture Brian Johnson singing Nessun Dorma

Re: Song not made for you.

Some voices fit well with the original key and style a song was written in and other's don't. If you want a song to fit your voice, you have to make that song your own. That could mean transposing the song into a more suitable key or changing the style completely. Otherwise, you'll just have to imitate what's already been done and that's not a good way to be original (unless maybe you're in a tribute band). And if that's the case, then you'll have to always live with people comparing you to the original singer or band. That's why I used Disturbed's cover of Land of Confusion as an example. Nobody, will ever say "David Draiman sounds like Phil Collins", nor will they ever say "Disturbed sounds like Genesis".
