THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

problems

just starting the 7 week program and it goes well.
but I am having some problems.

the first:
some times (mostly when i wake up) i try to breath in deeply and the part between the floating ribs (and a little lower) hurts and i cant breath completely.
what is it and how can i take care of it?!

the second:
whistling (no, not voice, just whistling)
I noticed that when I whistle my tung tends to go up for higher notes, will that create problems in my singing voice?

the third:
support-
in the book it says that when I support my belly should be flexible, and with a simple push it can be moved inward, but when i try pushing it, it is hard to push it in (not like i am "supporting" it to take a hit, it's just hard.)
whats wrong?

I know it sounds hysterical nut if I can't even breath right I can't move on.
thnx!

Re: problems

Do the extreme breathing exercise frequently, that should help with any breathing issues. Support is easier to understand through proper breathing and, and proper support leads to proper placement. Without the first, the 2nd and 3rd parts will be much harder to understand and get down. I'd also recomend getting the ultimate breathing workout, as it will thoroughly help you understand and master your breathing.

Re: problems

Breathing is natural; it shouldn't hurt anywhere. You might be trying to overdo the deep breathing. Just lay dow and RELAX. Imagine that you are smelling a the most wonderful perfume of the most beautiful flower you have ever seen

As for the support, your belly will come inwards a tiny bit as the air is expelled but you shouldn't move it inward on purpose. always push downward not inward. You want to try to keep your ribs expanded as much as possible. The push is the same as when you blow out candles on a birthday cake or blow your nose or sneeze. Hope that helps!

1. I'm guessing you might be sleeping curled up, or twisted in some way? I love to wrap myself around my body pillow when I sleep, but sometimes that does make me a little sore :).

I would suggest that you begin gently and don't try to take in as much air as you possibly can at first. I personally like to start slowly with a little stretching and some not-quite-full deep breaths. Meaning I don't try to take in my maximum air capacity at first... I just take in whatever is comfortable.

2. Not unless you whistle and sing the same way :p. I'm pretty sure you have to raise your tongue to whistle higher... I can't really whistle personally (just never really tried), but I think it's a bit like a woodwind in that you raise the tongue to speed up the flow of air by narrowing the stream of air.

3. I personally tried for the longest time to really get into that 'firm but flexible' thing and was constantly confusing myself till I suddenly just breathed in one day and it... sort of just happened :p. I think it takes a while of experimenting for your body to figure it out.

Sometimes you can try too hard at something, and I certainly was. You need to be able to relax your focus just a little for the support to kick in properly. I find that if I narrow all of my focus onto my support, it gets too tight because I start thinking, "is this right? Do I need to adjust it? Is it too soft? Am I tensing it too much?" :). But if I relax and let it happen it works much better.

Don't worry about not getting it just right at first--play around with it and I promise sooner or later your body will figure it out... maybe through trial and error, but you will get there.

Re: problems

James O. you summed it up perfectly;)
