THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

"Scratchy" or "Husky" voice:

Jaime mentions in RYV that people do not have a naturally husky voice unless there is something wrong. My most favorite singer of all time, Shannon Hoon, did not have so much a husky voice as he did a scratchy voice. There is something unique about his voice that I really love. I'd give anything to just borrow his vocal cords for a day.

Anyway, I was thinking of a song where his "scratchiness" is really noticeable and wanted to see if you guys think there is actually something physically different with him that gives him this sound. He definitely had a naturally high voice and could sing in the upper register with easy (not fair). I really do hate that he died so young!

Anyway, here is the video (for those of you who are impatient, fast forward to 4:47 for the actual song): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=f-KR7JjeoOk

Re: "Scratchy" or "Husky" voice:

Shannon had a great voice...I didn't watch the vid, but it is all the same. Shannon did have a problem where he was down in his throat, but he still sounded really cool. He had a very husky/scratchy/breathy approach but instead of hitting the highs like a metal or power singer, he tended to mix the tone to get that sound. In other words, he wasn't total full voice, kinda like Peter Cetera sang clean for Chicago or Jeff Buckley approached his material;)

Re: "Scratchy" or "Husky" voice:

Actually, I didn't think his voice was "scratchy" or "husky" at all. He only sort of did the "louis armstrong" growl on the high notes, which is quite common in blues.

And yes, it's unfair that he could sing high so easily

Re: "Scratchy" or "Husky" voice:

I Must not have listened to them enough because I've never really picked out a Louis Armstrong type sound at all???
