THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

applying full voice

hello, I have for the past couple weeks been able to get into full voice using sirens and in transcending tone up to A above high C. however I cannot apply this to singing.

it's very easy to do in the exercises but almost too difficult in actually singing a song. any ideas as to the problems? any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: applying full voice

When you do the sirens or the TT you are working on a vowel at a time. During a song, enunciation messes up everything!! Break down your song in very short passages and work on them very slowly. Pull down your chin with one hand between syllables and make sure that 1) you opened as much as you could on that syllable to tilt your larynx forward and that 2) your tongue reverts back to its relaxed position between enunciation (same as in the sound "gna" with the tip slightly resting on or behind your front lower teeth.

It's o.k. if it sounds robotic at first. You can speed up later. What you have to work on is the opening and relaxing the tongue.

Re: applying full voice

You have to be VERY STRICT and correct when doing these exercises. That's why Oiselle asks if you are sticking to the vowel. Also, I even state this in the book...It takes time to trasnfer those high notes to actual singing. You are singing the exercises on open vowels, the songs have changing consonants and vowels. Just make sure to add some semi-high songs to your daily practice and work towards the higher stuff;) You can only sing the higher songs by singing them over and over again;)

Re: applying full voice

ok good!!!! this is what I was thinking!!! sorry I lost my second edition on the computer because my dad erased everything so yes... I was hoping this was correct because I sang You Outta Know by Alanis Morrisette and that isn't typical highness for a guy and I sang it ok. It didn't sound that great but it sounded ok and I was able to hit all the notes while singing the song. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything incorrect. Thank youu!!!!

Re: applying full voice

Hey Jason, didn't you emaile me about losing your book? I get swamped with emails. Just resend again and I'll forward it to you;)

^

One of the best things about this board and Jaime in general. I can't think of another person who'd do that, most would just have you buy a new copy.

I love this place.

Re: applying full voice

Jaime is the man!

Re: applying full voice

Jaime your officially the nicest vocal teacher ever haha.

Seriously, no one else would do that.

Re: applying full voice

haha I know! ok I will, I figured it was something like that why you didnt resend. my email has been acting up, so I figured that could be another reason.

Re: applying full voice

What i've been doing that so far is working is:
30 minutes to 60 minutes of technique exercises
30 minutes to 60 minutes of singing songs

It varies depending on how much time I have. Today I did an hour of each, then worked on original songs for 30 minutes or so. So at least I know I can last that long haha.
