THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

What famous singer do you most naturally sound like?

I know that most of us are fans of singers that we may not sound like (without some effort anyway), but it seems that there have to be some that we also just naturally sound like. I remember Jaime mentioning that it's good to find a singer you sound like and use their songs to help you practice, so I've been trying to find a singer like this over the past few weeks. I'm sure I haven't found them all, but I've discovered recently that even though I'm a guy, the singer my voice is most similar to is not a dude: Annie Lennox. HAH! Now, I'm not as awesome as she is by any means but the natural sound of my voice is very, very similar to hers. Needless to say, I did NOT see that one coming!

So, how about you guys? Who do you just naturally sound like?

Re: What famous singer do you most naturally sound like?

I've been told that when using my chest voice I sound similar to a mix between Ozzy Osbourne and Vince Neil from motley crue, or Geoff Tate from queensryche in the song empire, but my gritty voice sounds alot like James Hetfeild from metallica. I don't have a well established upper register yet, so I've yet to discover who i really sound like in head voice.

I'd like my head voice to sound more like Bruce Dickinson or James Labrie, but with more grit in the screaming highs.

Re: What famous singer do you most naturally sound like?

To be honest I have no idea but I've been trying to sift through singers I sound like. Perhaps we could post clips of us singing something and get other people's opinions? Cause honestly I have no idea.

Re: What famous singer do you most naturally sound like?

Well, in grit mode, I can sing virtually any Manowar song, and the only thing I have problems with is Eric Adam's highest screams. (Keep in mind, I've been singing along to Manowar songs for over 25 years.)

I've been told I sound like Robin Zander (not what I wanted to hear) and I can do a mean Rob Halford.... my natural tone is very similar to Halford. I think when I'm doing the Eric Adam's material I'm pulling chest to get that heavier sound on the high notes....so I'm trying to learn to get more resonance without pulling chest.

I think in a lot of ways I'm a "chameleon" because I always tried to emulate each different singer's tone... I always thought it would help strengthen my voice and give me the widest palette of tones to choose from.

Eric Adams and Dio are pretty much my favorites singers as far as tone goes.

There is a singer that I sound identical to if I turn off the "bite" in my voice and that is Ted Pilot from Fifth Angel....but then again, I've been singing along to this material for 20 years as well.

I do the same thing with immitating artists... I have found that when I try to sing like Chris Daughtry I find it easiest... and in my head the tones are similar but I'm sure into someone else's ears it's completely different lol.

Re: What famous singer do you most naturally sound like?

I've tried for a while to find a singer I sounded like. I can't. I know that some songs by certain bands I find easy to sing in the way the notes are phrased. Dispatch, Alice in Chains, Counting Crows.

Bands like Faith No More and Incubus I can hit all of their notes, but the way the notes are ordered don't fit with my voice so easily. Its weird to describe.

For me? Definately William Hung. Just kidding. I honestly have no clue. Oiselle, do you think I sound like anyone?
