THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Strange sensation on soft palate....

Hi there,

i've been playing with my band today (whre i play guitars and singing ), and got a strange feeling.
I was not at my best and it was hard to get high notes today. And now my voice is a little tired ( 3 hours of rock singing..) but no that much BUT i feel my soft palate really irritated, also a little on my throat but it's really focused on my soft palate?

How can i correct that. Is it too much breath or too much pressure, wrong placement??

Thanxs

Re: Strange sensation on soft palate....

When you say that you had trouble getting the high notes, do you mean you were straining? Cause you should never reach for a note, that'll cause you to strain, always land on the note. Some factors to think of: Did you warm up well enough? Were you drinking plenty of water? Were you making sure not to shout to get the higher notes? Were you pushing your stomach out for higher notes?

The last 2 can cause strain, and the first 2 are just to keep the cords flexible and hydrated. If you were drinking alot of water, weren't shouting or reaching for the notes, weren't pushing out the stomach (remeber the idea of the power push is to be firm but flexible) and you warmed up properly, then perhaps you should give your body a rest. I don't know how much you sing usually, but we all have limits, the voice, like anything else when worked excesively will get tired. Sometimes you just gotta rest.

I'd say if the resting doesn't help and you were doing everything else you were supposed to do, then this problem is over my head, but thats what I would check on first.

Re: Strange sensation on soft palate....

You could potentially be getting sick. Sometimes when I'm getting sick it'll make my soft palate hurt for a bit.

Re: Strange sensation on soft palate....

This is the first symptom of a cold. The cold virus develops first in the adenoids located behind the nose above the soft palate. I always watch for that sensation even when it only feels like this area is dry to know when I'm getting a cold. If you know how to treat it and you do so early, you might get rid of the virus faster. I can do it in 3 days and more recently in 24 hours. I will explain how in my book "Voice Yourself in in the Classroom" so I can't tell you more right now... Sorry...

Re: Strange sensation on soft palate....

HI,

my problem seems to be gone.My voice is allright. I'm not sick at all. hurra!!!

I guess now why i got that problem:

When i practice at home i can really concentrate on breathing, support etc.... But when i got to play with my band, i can't concentrate on playing the guitar perfectly, sing perfectly and synchronise all those things at the same time. Also, you never hear you as you want.... And the thing is that on all the high notes ( glenn hughes things) i'm shouting more to get this bloody high C/D so i believe i give too much air on my throat and it irritate me.

The good part is that my voice is never shot the day after, and maybe it's was not so bad to have the soft palate irratated, it maybe means that i've got the right placement but wrong breath/support.

Thanxs for taking care of my problem!!

I just love this board
