THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Vocal health question concerning products

1. About the tea tree oil, lets say you accidentally swallowed some of the "fixer elixir" and that was one of the ingredients in it, what would that actually do? Should you rush to the hospital and get your stomach pumped immediately, or will you just feel a little nauseas? I can deal with nausea but i don't want to end up going to the hospital especially on days when I might have an important gig or recording to do.

While I'm at it, I can't find some of this stuff that I want to try out. Specifically: Ginseng, Licorice, Liquid Chlorophyll, Chamomile, Marshmallow, Kava Kava, and Cayenne. Are any of those toxic if ingested? And are there specific stores that any of you know where to find these? I'm very serious about vocal health, and really would like to start using some of these as alternatives to their less voice healthy medicine counterparts (such as nyquill).

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

You may be better off ordering them through the Internet.

Some Healthfood store employees still look at you funny, as if these are ingredients for a witch's brew.

I don't think the Tea Tree oil will kill you, after all - if you use it in a rinse - surely some of it gets absorbed into your system.

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

It would probably taste really nasty and might make you want to throw up but all of the ingredients are eatable unless I'm mistaken... Go to an organic food store to find these. There is a rule that says that you should only breath or put on your skin stuff that you can actually eat.

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

Ya, but Jaime mentions that 2 ingredients mentioned were harmful if ingested, peroxide and tea tree oil. Still, as long as it doesn't do anything terrible I think it should be fine, its not like i'm planning on guzzling the bottle, just wondering what 20 drops in 8 ounces of water would do if you took about a half a mouth full of it down by accident. I've found the teas and lozenges before at a place called no name nutrition. Never looked for the other stuff there, but its worth a second look. And I don't mind getting stared at, i'm used to that. I have hair down to probably my mid back, always wear sunglasses, rarely wear anything other than the color black, and I usually am wearing fingerless leather gloves with studded wristbands and a chain with a padlock around my neck. I'm pretty sure that if that wasn't enough reason for people to stare, the stuff i'm buying wouldn't really raise anymore eyebrows, unless its lighter fluid and a box of matches, then we have some strang looks.

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

One other question. I got Hain's sea salt, and it doesn't have iodine in it. My question is, if you're not allergic to iodine, is it good for you, or necessary? Some people have told me that I should have iodized sea salt instead, but these are the same people that told me that its a good idea to drink coffee the day of a performance, so I don't know if I should listen to them.

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

I don't know about iodine but since you have long hair (a very important factor in many rock singers) and you will be going to that natural product store, I'll give you my favorite tip to take care of split ends and prevent dry hair! Get some organic extra virgin coconut oil and put some on the tip of your hair after you shower. It works wonders over time Coconut oil is also excellent on dry skin and to cook with.

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

Haha, well thats for that. Thats actually something that i've had the occasional issue with. By the way, useful tip for anyone is looking for a drink that helps keep the throat from drying out.

8 oz. of water, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt (anymore than that and it tastes nasty) 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice, and 2 crushed up chewable vitamin C tablets if you want to sweeten up the taste a bit, as well as get a good burst of vitamin C. That what I've started drinking, before, during, and after singing sessions, and it keeps my throat moist much better than when I was just drinking water. It works best if the water is hot, but not to the point where its steaming. This is just what works for me, but if anyone else wants to try it, I'd recomend it, especially if you're vitamin c deficient.

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

Cool!

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

If you swallow a small amount iof either, its not going to kill you. In fact, I know of people who ingest Peroxide for health concerns with substantial results, but that information is beyond my expertise and therefore I cannot support that thought. But, like I said, swallow a bit from a glass of water won't do you in;)

Re: Vocal health question concerning products

K good, but what about the iodine thing? Cause I got just regular sea salt, but it also had iodized sea salt. Although I noticed the table salt that we'd been buying had no iodine in it either, so I wasn't ever getting any iodine from salt, so does it really make a difference?
