THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

This is probably a stupid question

So I just finished read RYV 2nd edition, and I was wondering if it was just an extention of the 1st edition, or if I should get the 1st one too.

Like I said probably a stupid question.

But while i'm here, might as well ask one that isn't as stupid. I've just started the 7 week program described on page 299 of the book. So this question, or rather questions, are for anyone else who followed that approach. During which week did you start to see actual range improvement? What about stronger tone? At the end of the 7 weeks, what variations of the excersises did you find worked the best? And specifically on the falsetto slide and transending tone excersises, I can't tell whether or not focusing the falsetto into the soft palate is the same mechanism as head voice or not, so is the idea to use head voice, or am I confused as to what head voice is?

Re: This is probably a stupid question

No you do not need to buy the first edition.

And the last part; everyone is different. I have had some decent progress in the past few months. So yeah, don't worry about how fast or high too much. Just practice, and you will get there.

Re: This is probably a stupid question

that 7 week program from what i can tell is about perfecting the exercises so that you can practice more efficiently. having said that though i think my noticeable improvement came during the transcending tone week

Re: This is probably a stupid question

K thanks guys. I was just asking the time it took for people to see improvement to see if there was a pattern, not really to see when i'd notice a huge change. I know its gotta be different for everyone.

Still confused on the head voice issue though. See what i've noticed is what I think is falsetto that I have going on is a very airy thing that I can feel mostly is my throat for the most part unless I go really high with it, and it has no dynamic range at all, its quiet no matter what I do. The other thing is less airy, but not strong enough to be full voice, although it does connect with my chest voice, and it has dynamic range, but it can not go as high as my falsetto. So to me it seems like that could be head voice. So I guess the question I really have is, is that head voice, or just a different way of doing falsetto? And really does it matter on the falsetto slide or transending tone if you use head voice or falsetto as long as you keep it very light?

Just want to add one thing: I've been singing for a while, but just recently decided to start focusing on technique thats why these terms still confuse me. And I don't own a web cam so sadly I can't make a video showing what I am trying to describe.

Re: This is probably a stupid question

It's hard for me to tell based on that description. Try to record yourself and post it here. We don't need a video, an mp3 file is enough.

Re: This is probably a stupid question

if you listen to the transcending tone example that jaime put out it starts in falsetto then goes to headvoice and you can hear the tonal differences pretty easy there.

Re: This is probably a stupid question

That is extremely helpful. Never thought to do it that way.

And i'd record myself, but I don't have any way of doing that. My computer is very old school.

Re: This is probably a stupid question

In the book I state that there are vairations of both falsetto and full voice, or degrees if you will. in fact I put them on a 1-10 scale. Review that part. You might be close to full voice but not quite there;)
