Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Loud Whistle Register?

I'm just curious about this: I've noticed most people seem to have a relatively small whistle register.

However I've met two girls who both have average sized head/chest voices. As they ascend, they gain some volume till they have relatively large sounds around the G/A5 and getting a little louder as they ascend till about a D6.


But wow. One sang the doll song and hit an A6. It was -huge-. I was sitting about ten rows back while she sang it, and it absolutely filled the auditorium. It was a huge sound.


The other one was vocalizing in the same room as I was while we waited for our turns at a competition, and she vocalized up to a C7, and the entire time it was a loud sound. She said she can't always do it that high, but that it's always very loud, and she showed no signs of strain: no bulging muscles, her jaw was relaxed, her tongue was relaxed, and she just looked really comfortable.



How do they do that? Is that blending their head voices into the whistle or something? Or do some people just have loud whistle registers? The times that I've vocalized through whistle register, going up to about an F6, it's quite a small sound, and I've noticed that most of the other guys/girls I've met who can do whistles also make a very small sound.

Well the whistleregister can be connected into fullvoice singing for girls, thats what they teach the high sopranos of the opera. A small whimpy whistlevoice wont carry over an orchestra.

Ive got a pretty wimpy whistlevoice(it's not very loud volumewise) But the more i train it the louder it gets. I know a guy who can vocalise up to C7 in whistleregister and all the notes sounds like piercing metalscreams

I'm no expert, but I would assume that dynamic range would be easier to controll with more practice, as it seems to be with most other registers. I could be wrong, but then again, girls probably would use the whistle register more than guys would, just as guys probably use low chest voice more than girls would. There are exceptions to that obviously, but perhaps these 2 girls just use whistle so much that they developed a strong volume controll over it.
